For those of you interested in a dieoff you may disagree but, how about penicillin? How many people died from bizzare stupid diseases before the advent of this miracle drug. I know its not as popular as mercury filled vaccinations... but still impressive discovery. (Does it count as an invention though?)

Our greatest accomplishment is not having nuked the whole planet yet.

Also the destruction of communism, we're almost done with that, we should continue kicking communism in the ass untill we are over with it.

The partial erradication of slavery.

And the discovery of food preservation.

language, it was the first and most important step

I'll vote for the written or printed word...it allowed us to learn things from persons who are long dead. It allows us to leave information for others long after we're dead.

IMHO THIS is the most important step (although you would need language first ofcourse).

<edit> sliced bread is a close 2nd :)

I'll go with RonMN : The greatest accomplishment is the writing concept.. Just veeery close below come the invention of guttenberg --> the printing machine !

The first permited the accumulation of knowledge and pass it to the next generation, the second helped like nothing else in history the distribution of this knowledge to the masses 8O ..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('frankthetank', 'N')ot sure if man really has accomplished much, unless you consider destroying Earth an accomplishment
well, in a way it is. It's been said that Nature abhors a gradient. Humanity is the most efficient entropy-generating organism to ever come down the pike. So we can stick that feather in our hat and call it macaroni.

Yes, yes that will definately by our greatest accomplishment, destroying the earth and ourselves with it; it will eclipse all thing that we ever did combined....

however, we're not quite there yet; we could only rightfully say that that was our greatest accomplishment, against all odds, if there was no one of us left to say it, otherwise it'll just be our greatest folly.

I remember reading that there was a time when there was only about 50,000 of us. Some kind of demographic disaster. We made it through that one, some of us may make through this one, provided we don't unleash the nukes.

When things get really desperate do you think they won't be?

I don't put the blame entirely on humans, hell...this shit was here to discover and burn...

I do think that nukes will be volleyed at some point. What faster way can you think of to destroy huge urban populations? The US/Russia/China alone could erase how many billions in how many hours? A week? The initial blow could probably VAPORIZE how many cities?

I've got a couple of nuke documentaries on my computer that i watch from time to time just to see the shear awesome power of just one, now imagine 1000's falling from the sky!

Do you think that non nuclear countries will also be targeted by nukes? Will someone just lob one into Bangkok or something?

"Sir, we've got 1 nuke here with no target"
"ahhhh, fuck.... I think my ex-wife is on vacation in Bora Bora..."
lawns should be outlawed.

I think man's greatest accomplishment was the control and use of fire. Where would we be without that important first step?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('yeahbut', 'B')y all means. Go right ahead. And can I suggest that for some people out there, the greatest accomplishment of man by far was the synthesis of lysergic acid...

heh heh, indeed. But not recommended for daily use. It makes people hyper-sensitive. I wonder if Heinberg or Kunstler took it in their hippie youth.

Not sure what you mean by that; You mean mixing entropy I assume, in which case humanity often reduces mixing entropy. Much of industrial civilization requires refining of materials from mixed ores.

Man didn't do that. It naturally occurs in ergot. I think you may be confusing lysergic acid with lysergic acid diethylamide

The internal combustion engine. It allowed us to fulfill our destiny. To kill the Earth and ourselves collectively. Suicide is lonely and sad, ecocide is grand and obviously the human choice.
