I have a theory...

I have a theory. I am thinnking that the leading cause of death (from disease) in the US is:

Stress caused by:

1. too much caffeine consumption
3. not enough sleep
4. too much stress from financial debt
5. too many working hours (not enough leisure time)
6. environmental pollution (including noise)

In other words, many Americans have weak immune systems due to stress on the body, which eventually leads to death from disease (caused by the things I listed above). Life for most of us just isn't so simple anymore.

Ooops! I forgot to leave out another important one:

Stress on the body due to lack of excercise and unhealthy eating habits.

Three things:

1. caffeine
2. sugar
3. salt

1. excess use of caffeine and sugar lead to adrenal overload, which is now being talked about as having epidemic proportions. If your adrenal glads are stimulated ALL DAY can you imagine the impact?

2. sugar is the cheapest filler in todays food maufacturing system. You can't even get saugsages without sugar for heavens sake.

3. case in point: McDonalds french fries. our taste buds have been so skewed by salt that most people think food is boring and bland without. but unless its over done most people can't taste it anymore. any guesses what this does to your body?

One can argue that materialism and greed has caused this unhealthy lifestyle. People subject themselves to this unhealthy lifestyle in the city, one which requires a person to take drugs (coffee :) ) to stay awake, work long hours, and expose himself to pollution and stress, in order to pay for their expensive toys, cars, and gadgets. In fact, many buy so many luxuries and find themselves hopelessly in debt, and chained to a desk job to pay for their lavish spending expenses, in the form of their health and in the precious seconds in their lives.
easy come, easy go.
Life's but a dream.

Heart disease is the #1 killer. 1 out of 2 will die from it. Genetics and the unhealthy lifestyle and diet. #4 leading cause is properly prescribed and properly taken prescription medications, usually in a hospital. 8O

 You do realize that you just described medical school & residency? i.e. my life for the last eight years.

I couldn't agree more. One of my attendings was counseling a patient a couple of years ago about how he should stop working such long hours and try to balance his life more. I almost fell down laughing. He quickly pointed out that such admonitions should not be understood as applying to residents. Sorta interesting that how you get trained to be a doctor is to lead the most unhealthy life imaginable for eight years, huh?

I would add in overcrowding, lack of exercise, and malnutrition (i.e. eating unhealthy food) to the list.
