The rest just move their old one downstairs or to the garage when they get a new one. I know a family with a house a little over 1,000 square ft (a bit less over 100 square meters) that has three fridges. Since the electric bill went up gradually, the residents probably didn't notice. The oldest Fridge is rounded on top, so was probably made in the '50s.
