Re: Is Facebook the face of Total Information Awareness?

Postby gg3 » Sun 15 Jul 2007, 09:17:46

The abuse of the terms PERSONAL and EXPERIENCE is enough to make me want to projectile-vomit.

"We will provide you with a MORE PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE ..."

All I can say about that is, they can get their cold clammy hands out of my pants and out of my brain. Grrr! I do not want a "personal" "experience" being crafted for me by a bunch of drones, any more than I want to go out on a date with someone and find out he's a friggin' zombie.

---

That being said, it should be transparently obvious that Facebook and all the rest of those types of places are COMINT (communications intelligence, a specific subset of signals intelligence) collection inputs, either to government or to the private-sector or both.

And also, I cringe every time I see people talking about personal data in public places. No doubt most of it can be harvested, no doubt most of it is.

One of my colleagues doesn't even want his photo on the company website for just that reason: a spider could grab it.

The safe bet in cyberspace is to not post your picture, don't ever talk about where you live to within about 10 miles at the very minimum, post no identifying information, and stick to ideas and actions: what you think, what you believe, what you do (not including enough to identify your employer or your favorite hangouts).

And if I lived in London I would also run around in "heavy makeup," which is to say, camouflage, and reflective sun glasses, so the three hundred cameras per day that I would encounter on average, would get nothing useful.

No problem, oswald. I try check out The Republic whenever I remember, cause they've printed some gems in the past few years. And they have a nice sense of humour about themselves, too, because of all the flak they've taken from the mainstream media.

gg3, you're right, and I myself have gotten a little sloppy lately. I've got to get outside of my den more often, really.

I haven't joined any Facebook group, although I'd heard of it (I don't want new accounts unless there's a really good reason).

Tell us a bit more about it with relevant links. I would join to increase PO awareness.

I started this group a while back on Facebook; haven't really done anything with it, though. 7 members so far.

peakoil.com group (unofficial)

I'm in these as well:
Have you heard of Peak Oil?

Facebook: Have you heard of Peak Oil?

Postby Nicholai » Tue 08 Jul 2008, 11:42:27

So there are about 5 guys in this group called "Have you heard about Peak Oil" on Facebook and they can't seem to stop harping about "algae oil production" and all of these wonderful technologies. Here is a quote from one of the members,

"Nick: - 'How will 6.7 billion people supported by fuel-intensive agriculture survive on the power grid?'
Rizzoni: Well as I see it farmers could produce their own biofuels from an algal culture, MCF as John suggested (feed in agri-waste), or something we haven't even thought of yet. As Mike has pointed out you CAN in fact make some fertilizers from electricity.

Mike: Actually, one of the methods for storing e- from wind that one of the contributors is going commercial with IS the production of Ammonia...Anhydrous ammonia is a very common fertilizer. Also, there is the wonderful concept of Humanure and Composting, both of which you can do yourself to keep the soil you need well fertilized."

I'm going to set up a swatch of reasons why we won't be able to avoid a crash AND a die off but these people are ingrained in believing that the new techno fix is just around the corner. It's just astounding.

I'm sure you'll find lots of stuff to work with, but here's my little quip for your list.

The biggest (untold) problem with algae is the massive amounts of fertilizer you need. Sure you can make hundreds of tonnes of biomass on a single acre, but what comes out must go in so that means hundreds of tonnes of "algae feed" to dump into the system.

Normally not a problem except for the fact that we're having problems with fertilizer prices and supply now. Add a couple of acres of Algae farms and your depriving untold amounts of crop farms of fertilizer.

Add to that Nat gas depletion (as a source of nitrogen based fertilizer), and you have a recipe for death by bio-fuels starvation.

Anyways, have fun trolling, but don't expect any lights to come on anytime soon. As any argument you come up with can be quickly defeated by new found supplies of Unatanium

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'a')s John suggested (feed in agri-waste), or something we haven't even thought of yet.

PO.com is going to need another upgrade or two if people keep posting topics like this: "On this site, people are denying PO and thinking that there's a cornucopian solution". Get over it. There are stupid people. Let'em rot if they want to.

Just listen to this kid, he spouts on about algae production as if it could produce thousands of barrel per day. Here is him explaining it to a girl in his most recent post.

"Michelle it actually has been tried and tested and the only hurdle that remains is creating a large scale demonstration "algae oil field" on the tune of a few thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day. If they can pull it off more will follow and the nice bit is unlike other biofuels the production of algae oil is completely "solar" powered and doesn't necessarily require any external input of energy."

It's just sad that a group with almost 3,000 members is filled with such a Ad hom deleted. bunch. It's too bad. Aw well, better chance of me having a spot in an ecovillage while these Ad hom deleted. wait for the tooth fairy :D !

The solution? You're sitting on it  sewage algae may well help solve that problem, if anyone can ever get it to work. Brown gold, people! :-D

Peak Oil Kiwis on Facebook

Postby kiwiduncan » Mon 14 Jul 2008, 22:55:17

If anyone is interested I've set up a Peak Oil Kiwis group on Facebook.

Like a lot of Facebook groups this might just end up being another boring group with very little traffic, interest or contributions, but it might be a good way of connecting with other Kiwis preparing for a peak oil world.

Anyone have a facebook?

Postby Tyler_JC » Sat 17 Jan 2009, 01:00:29

Facebook hits the 150,000,000 users mark!

If Facebook were a country, it would be the world's 8th most populous, right between Bangladesh and Nigeria.

On a related note, if you are a member of facebook and would like to "meet" other facebook Peak Oilers, I suggest joining the www.peakoil.com facebook group founded by our very own emersonbiggins.
