Seeds of Change's "Sustainable" Candy Bar (rant)

Unread postby Narz » Fri 16 Nov 2007, 19:13:20

Ingredients :

  • chocolate (from the Dominican Republic)
  • sugar (sugarcane from where? Hawaii maybe?)
  • cocoa butter (from chocolate, perhaps grown somewhere else processed at a factory perhaps in the US)
  • milk fat (non-organic so most likely from factory farmed cows somewhere in the states)
  • soy lecithin (wherever somewhere "around the world", the US probably)
  • vanilla (from somewhere tropical)
  • lemon essence (whatever the fuck that means)
  • coffee beans (again, from somewhere thousands of miles away from where where this product will be sold to stupid yuppies who think they're "making a difference")

Written on the back of the wrapper :

PROVIDING SUSTENANCE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ade exclusively with organically grown cacao from the Dominican Republic and organic fruits, nuts and spices sourced from around the world. Delicious proof that sustainability and good taste go hand in hand.

So sad. For every one person serious about sustainability there are a hundred tools who swallow crap like this (pun intended) without a second thought.

I mean we're all hypocrites and tools in our own way (myself for Amazon.com for example) but at least I don't deny it.

The vanilla may be synthetic.

Makes me feel a little self-righteous as I bite into a crisp flavorful apple that I harvested from trees that I planted and that have had no sprays, or fertilizers other than compost, mulch, rotted manure and some trace minerals years ago.

But I won't brag. And I must admit a bit of chocolate does taste good once in awhile.

But I sometimes feel guilty about it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'S')eeds of Change was a small seed company that grew and marketed heirloom non-hybridized seeds--which are a good thing.

Yeah, I knew that, I had no idea they made candy bars until just the other day.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')hen the Mars Co. bought them and gave the business to the young heir. I seem to remember the first new 'corporate' (actually Mars is still a family business) product was a line of frozen organic foods.

I didn't know that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'W')hile organic tends to be better than chemical farming, it is not very sustainable.

Yeah, I'm all for organics and supporting small farmers but don't call your product "sustainable" if the ingredients are from a total of 50,000 miles away.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WisJim', ' ')And I must admit a bit of chocolate does taste good once in awhile.

I agree. If I had a billion dollars I'd grow a cocoa tree jungle in a huge earthquake resistant greenhouse. I'd have a whole lil' tropical ecosystem in there, coconuts, macadamian nuts, durians. Mmmm. While I'm dreaming I want a futuristic clocking device for it to make it look like just more wasteland to the zombie hordes. :o
