Sarkozy is saying very nice things about America. I, for one, am glad to hear it. The Statue Of Liberty was a gift from France. We would not have beat the English in the Revolutionary War if it wasn't for French help in the Chesapeake Bay. Viva La France!

As long as I am pissing off the rabid lefties here, how about this:

- Simply Living God's Will And Way -

JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

Ah yes, the support for the Americans in the war of independence helped the French becoming so indebted it resulted in arguably the most important event in European history; the French revolution.

Coincidentally, both revolutions were inspired by very similar concepts like "no taxation without representation" for one.

Bullcrap. The French Revolution was a European event. A sad one indeed, which laid the foundations for the Russian version.

how is it bullcrap? true though that you had some early communists among the French revolutionaries that believed that land cannot be privately owned (makes some sense actually)

I didn't say they were exactly the same, the starting situations were very different, but the concepts of freedom were very similar and a product a product of the same philosphical movement: the enlightenment.

That the French revolution turned out to be so much more bloody and had so much more impact at the time than the American revolution is because the nobility were right there to suppress the people at the heart of a continent where that had been "the way things were" for almost a millenium. At the time the American colonies ofcourse were small in number of people, as was the revolution, compared to France and it's revolution and it's effect on wider Europe, but in historical signifcance, both revolutions as well as the Russian one, probably share the no. 1 spot in terms of ultimate importance. (I'm sure you can argue long or short about which revolution was more important, I don't care about that)

Anyway, I terms of philosphy, America has more in common with France (and maybe holland which was a defacto republic since the 16th century) then any other country, though the language ties with England have apperently proved more important, however irrational that may sound.

French support for the American Revolution was simply a strategic move on their part to undermine the British Empire. America benefited greatly from this and probably wouldn't have won independence without French support. Since then, France and the USA have had a love/hate relationship. Americans do have a lot in common with the French, more so than with many other Europeans; we are both sentimental and highly emotional, hence the stormy love affair.

I am a mix of French, English and German which is why I'm so confused. When watching WW2 movies, a part of me wants to throw my Spaten Lager in the air and shout “Sieg Heil!” Another part of me wants to get falling down drunk every night from heavy IPAs. Another part of me wants to gorge on crusty bread, cheese and wine all afternoon.

Well, yes the American revolutionaries were nicer to the opponents. They could be. They had an advantage, a fairly empty place called Canada, to the north, where the 100,000 or so traitors to the revolution could escape, though stripped of most of their assets.

One country's traitors are another country's loyalists.
