Bright Kids

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Fri 09 Nov 2007, 23:30:27

Most of the time, as a substitute teacher, I get kids with no ambition and no intellectual curiosity. They are sociable but they don't care about math or science. But once in a while I get a choice assignment. Once I had an assignment to teach pre-calculus for a week. They were smart kids and I relished it. I covered the subject and brought in all kinds of subtexts to make it richer. They astounded me by giving me an ovation. This past week I got another opportunity with chemistry classes. All smart kids. If I could have nothing but classes like that I wouldn't be a substitute. Kids like that make me proud to be an American.

It was 15 years ago when I taught my first regular classes. I had 2 senior physics classes and 3 freshmen remedial math classes. The physics classes were great. We covered Kepler's Laws and Newtonian Physics. I'd do it again. The freshman math classes were a nightmare and I vowed that I would never do it again. And so here I am, substituting all these years later.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'T')hen there are the ones outside academia, like my perrmaculture teacher and my aikido teachers.

it was the sight of all those black belts stretching that left me thinking, what are they doing ?, it looks INTERESTING, i'll have to try that.

this led to starting yoga in 1996. and comments like, "i didn't know FAT people could do yoga."

i revere the 10 or so most talented engineers & physicists i have worked with, who taught by example, with a total "can do" attitude. kind of a combination of "McGyver'ism" (willingness to improvise using the tools at hand) and technical brilliance, with a touch of questioning-authority-ish-ness.

the guys i worked with at an HP instrument competitor in the mid-80's ran rings around the guys i worked with for a large defense contractor. pencils & sweat & attitude & vertical integration, vs. months of analysis & CAD simulation & outsourcing; the team using the former methods was far more effective.

when the kids PMS is teaching are graduated, maybe we'll be back to local manufacturing in the US, and they'll think, "ah yes, Sensei PMS was right."
