When I was eight, I remember walking to the spring and making three trips with two buckets in near freezing temps. We would boil just one bucket on the wood stove. This evens out the other ice cold buckets of creek water.
It was very tedious.
A earth shelter just would not work in most of Texas or Oklahoma. We have too much gumbo soil that expands and contracts all the time based on moisture.
