Friendly Reminder!

Unread postby mommy22 » Fri 09 Nov 2007, 12:02:48

To those of you who live in northern climes, please read! This is a friendly reminder that as the snow starts to fly, and acumulating, please remember to make the effort to shovel your sidewalk in a timely manner. Those of us who do walk have a really hard time getting through when the snow doesn't get shoveled. I walk my daughter every day to school all year, and it's really difficult to climb over the snow when it's new, and as it does melt, it turns to ice and gets dangerous.
So, please, shovel your sidewalk! And a really nice thing to do is to shovel a homebound elderly' sidewalk, which will help them and walkers in your neighborhood.
Thanks!

Excellent! We may be preaching to the choir here, but it never hurts to remind people. More and more people will be walking this winter, please do your part to make it reasonably easy for them.

(Not to mention that clearing your sidewalk is the law in most northern areas.)

You folks up north have some funny notions! If it is your sidewalk why is it the law to shovel it for your neighbors to walk on? I would consider it trespassing for someone to be walking on my property. If it is a right of way shouldn't it be the local government’s responsibility to clean it off? Is it some sort of compulsory civic duty to shovel sidewalks in front of your house?

No offense but Ya'll must not have anything better to do on those cold dreary days than shovel the sidewalks and walk around the block taking notes of who isn't shoveling while on your way to the market.

I'm off to clear the road of Rattlers so my neighbors won't get bit! [smilie=5bullwhip.gif]

What is this "snow" you keep mentioning?

Some kind of gang thing?

I'm going sailing.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I don't think she means the kind of snow you'd find on a sailboat.

Where I live, the snow has to be cleared within 24 hours of when it stops falling. You can do it or the city can do it, but the city charges a hefty fee . I don't mind shoveling snow. It gives me an excuse to get some excercise. However, it seems like every year a few elderly die of heart attacks while shoveling. Do help out your older neighbors!

If you believe everything you read about GW Aaron., you will be tying up your boat to the Bates Motel porch someday.

Actually, when it snows here there ain’t no Lawman venturing this far to know where my shovel is – but I do plow the neighbors drive and up to the corner if that counts.

I find it hard to believe that some of you find the issue of whether or not people should have to shovel their sidewalk to be contentious.

They had the right approach to this problem in Austria, where I lived for 10 years... If someone injured themself while walking on your uncleared/icy sidewalk you were automatically liable to reimburse the government run medical system for their medical expenses plus additional damages. Also, the police could issue tickets to people who failed to clear their sidewalk. Every morning after a snowfall you'd hear people out shovelling at 6am... lest some senior citizen fall and break a hip.

I wish there was some way snowplows could stack all the snow they've shovelled in front of the driveways of bastards who don't clear the sidewalk in front of their place in Canada. Then they'd see just what an inconvenience not having access to your preferred mode of getting around is!

Get this: it isn't your sidewalk. The sidewalk is technically municipal property. Your property line technically ends at the near edge of the sidewalk. You are then required by law to maintain the city property from your property line to the street. In some cases, you're also responsible for the street itself to the centerline, but usually the municipality takes care of that part.

I know all of the libertarians out there will think that's the devil at work, but up here if it didn't work that way we wouldn't have streets maintained by the city, and then the only way to get out when it really snows would be by skis (which I do some times!)

And as for taking notes, my wife and kids walk to school everyday, so they just report the folks who make it dangerous for them to get to school and back. If people don't like it, we always encourage them to move somewhere out of town where there are no sidewalks. Of course, when gas hits $5 a gallon, they'll wish they had just stayed and cleared their sidewalk.
