now now, you've got to give me time to respond. I've been at work. sheesh. a) the (m+n)!m!n! was clearly a misunderstanding and mistake on my part, so I retract that. b) It was (m+n)!/m!n! which you meant as your answer in the case of the 11X5 grid problem. As you pointed out, it isn't feasible to actually count them all when m=11 and n=5. I tried using smaller values of m and n and actually drawing the routes. In the case of 3X4 I was expecting to find 35 routes and only found 10. In the case of 3X5 I was expecting to find 56 routes and only found 15. Then I remembered that several very bright people here all came up with 1001 as the answer to your grid problem, off by a similar factor to your answer. So I thought, hmm, jason seemed so confident that he had worked it out correctly so that I thought I should check out his google link. What did I find? Links to the value of 16!/11!5! and then some cases where that number is useful. There were further links but I didn't see anything about a grid problem. So as of now, I am assuming that you were in error. c) you are somewhat of a prankster and lighthearted by your own admission but you do seem sincere about this, so d) my saying you were a full of shit poser was uncalled for and I retract that too.

Take a look at the two by two grid i posted. I even verified my findings with the head of my colleges math dept and he verified my answer. So I am 100% positive of my solution, it just pissed me off to be attacked because people don't understand something.

In case you all forget I am a self declared villiage Idiot as a protest to the label of expert. I may not be Einstein but I also know when I am right and I would never post a math question that I was not 100% certain of the answer.

Sorry I attacked back, it was beneath me.

No problema. But I don't know about the profs in your math department. I did try 3X4 and 3X5 and it doesn't jive. Sometimes seeing is believing. I see no reason why 5X11 should introduce some new principles. btw, sorry about your injuries.

Okay, well I am not smart enough to figure out a way to prove it. I will try to get an appointment with Dr. Cheng and see if he can provide me a proof. I just know that I am right.

Physical Injuries Heal.

I suppose a lot of people are right depending on how the interepreted the problem and the grid

I'm glad to hear your injuries aren't causing any current problems for you. But regarding your posed mathematical problem, I would encourage you to do what I did. Try simpler cases and actually draw the solution. It isn't hard to do. There is nothing abstract about it. Why should 3X5 be any different than 5X11 with respects to an equation or mathematical expression which is reputed to give the answer? The fact that you went to your professors of mathematics to see if you are right in your solution tells me that you aren't exactly sure. You can trust them or you can try a simpler case and see for yourself.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'B')ut I don't know about the profs in your math department. I did try 3X4 and 3X5 and it doesn't jive. Sometimes seeing is believing. I see no reason why 5X11 should introduce some new principles.

The mathematician in me requires me to butt in again. As pawn noted before, you are both right in your answers.

You two are solving different problems. There is a 4x3 line grid containing 3x2 cells. You are traveling through the cells while jason is travelling along the lines.

Jumping through 3x2 cells gives you 5!/(3!2!) = 10 routes, so you are correct. However travelling along the lines it's 7!/(3!4!) = 35 routes, which means jason is correct.

Either way, the formula to solve it is stays the same. This concludes the math part of the problem, but two can continue debating the lingual aspect of the problem until the end of peak oil. ;)

[edit] And this is why I should type faster :) the discussion ended before I posted this now redundant post. [/edit]

The problem, as posited by jason (and you can find it on page two of the open forum) was quite clear. It did not involve going along the lines of the grid. This sort of obfuscation won't cut it. That jason would endorse this sort of obfuscation is disappointing.

I didn't asked to be attacked constantly and I am just getting to damn old to be dealing with this kind of crap. It was fun when I was a teenager, back before 95% of you could even turn on a computer or knew what one was.

I think I am going to find another place to hang my hat, where everyone is not to busy feeling so self concious over there own inadequecies to participate in a community without attacking their fellow members.

This is just not worth my time anymore. I am tired of defending myself to people who can't grasp humor, basic math, or common sense.

I have been on this forum for over 2 years and I have had 3 accounts. I have been banned twice by monte for standing up to him when I felt he was attacking others and while doing so I attacked his credibility as a moderator so he banned me and probably rightfully so. I have no beef with monte and for the most part like the guy.

My name is not Jason it is Jeremiah, (EvilMonkeySpanker) Jason is my dead brothers name Raymond is my grandfather and son references my dad.

Everything I have stated in this thread is 100% true and accurate to the best of my own accountability.

Aarron, Please delete all of my posts and all of my threads and this goes for "ALL" you know what I mean. This includes getting rid of my account(s)

You are overreacting. Stick around. You are valued here. I, for one, would not like to see you pull up your tent and leave.

Now that I have outed myself as evilmonkeyspanker I will be gone.

I am a permentently banned member of peakoil.com and thus due to the rules of the forum this account will be closed probably before the night is over and I understand this as these are the rules.

I am probably over reacting but I just tired of this and I waste alot of time I should spend studying, on these forums.

edit.

In case you haven't noticed I am also a hypocrit since I attack others for attacking others and tell people to grow up when half the time I act like I am still a teenager.

But, I still don't believe that anyone is actually an expert other than me and I am an expert at not being an expert. :P

OK, see ya later evilmonkeyspanker. But this exchange has confirmed for me something I have known for a long time: age and cunning will defeat youth and talent every time.
