Do you you have any idea how large 16!11!5! is? You're full of shit. First you you say you are stupid at math. Then you say you solved the rubic's cube when you where five. Then you say you are going into radiology. Then you say, no, you are studying chemical engineering. Then you say, "well. I'm tired" and then you disappear. We've got a poser here folks.

Jason? Who's Jason? And did you tried sending a PM first?
edit: ah... jasonraymondson, well, what did you expect from the Village Idiot?
IMO, it's like someone drunk in a party... it's basically harmless (with some exeptions) AND funny.

I must thank you on behalf of myself and everyone else who got fooled. In hindsight, it is funny, and I'm not proud. I can take a joke. At least there is an answer to that difficult puzzle. But it doesn't have a few hundred zeroes after it.

Somewhat unrelated, but we had a bug in our software where I worked that accidentally tried to calculate 1666797! which basically caused the server to grind to a halt.

I wrote a short python program on another machine (a 4 CPU Sun Unix server with 8GB RAM) to see if it could actually calculate that number. I let it run for over 3 months straight, but eventually had to kill it because the power for the building was going to be reset. After that much time, it had calculated the number to over 8.5 million places. As a fun exercise, I wrote a script that randomly check 5-digit strings in the file and it had a 100% find rate. 6-digits were 95%. So that is one big number. Based on the number of iterations it went through to get 8.5 million places, I figured it would take about 75 years to complete computing the number and would require a few hundred gigabytes to actually store the number in ASCII. So.... your little number above is pretty big, but I've seen bigger. :)

And, btw, isn't JR the village idiot? Why dole out the vitriole for such a doofus?

EDIT TO POINT THIS OUT>

Hey ass, don't you have a sense of humor. Everything I do on here is to be funny and to goof off. What, can't you figure that out. Sarcasm is the key to my existence.

Oh and by the way, my math problem is correct.

If you have an 11 x 5 grid going from top left to bottom right the maximum possible paths is [ 16! / ((11!)(5!)) ] google it, I am sure you can find a similar problem online. IT GIVES YOU THE NUMBER 4 368 WHERE THE HELL DO YOU SEE THAT I POSTED ANYTHING DIFFERENT

and if you need to know everything about me

I was a media production major (ask Aaron) I do video editing and production, and webdesign but I am in the process of changing my major to radiology.

I just turned 30 on Nov 2nd

I found out about peakoil 3.5 years ago, but I don't actually give a shit, because this is only part of the big picture. I hang out here to be part of the community and I enjoy being the class clown (always have)

I served with the 224th eng BT in Afganistan where I was damn near killed when the truck in front me was hit by an I.E.D. and rolled over the top of my truck killing two of my friends. I suffered 3rd degree burns over 40% of my body and barely missed scarring the hell out of my face. I also lost the vision in my left eye.

I come from a very poor family and my stepmother used to abuse me as a child and when she wasn't stabbing me with knives or putting cigs out on my body I was locked in my room for days at a time.

My real mother was an actual crack whore.

Oh ya I solved the fucking cube when I was 5 it isn't that damn hard I taught my niece to solve it when she was 4.

My life sucks, but I allow myself happiness by make everything out to be a big joke... because If I don't do this I would have killed myself a long long time ago.

There you go, I hope I have provided you enough info about myself. Do you need to know my cock size as well?

I believe your talking about sequences, something I used to do to keep myself from agonizing boredom in art class.

if you take 1 + 2 it equals 3

If you take 1 + 2 + 3, it equals 6

If you take 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, it equals 10

do you see the pattern here?

2 * 1.5

3 * 2 = 6

4 * 2.5 = 10
5 * 3 = 15
6 * 3.5 = 21

The pattern is X * (X/2 + 0.5)

Lets see if the pattern holds.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15

1 + 2 + 3 = 6
then you've got 4
then you combine that with the 5, and you get 15!

Lets see about 6 * 3.5

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
5 + 6 = 11
11 + 10 = 21

So now that we've established this method working...

16 * (16/2 +0.5)
16 * (8.5) = 136

11 * (11/2 + 0.5)
11 * 6 = 66

5 * (5/2 + 0.5)
5 * 3 = 15

15 * 66 * 136

And the number you get is...

134640.

Hope y'all learned something!

Also some ways you can manipulate the sequences for fun!

If your starting out at a place other than 0

lets say, 2, and your going to lets say ten, then you would have,

8! + (8 * 2)

Lets see if it works!

8 * (8/2 + 0.5) = 8 * 4.5 = 36

8 + (8 * 2)

or 36 + 16 = 52

3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10

19 + 8 + 13 + 9 + 3

21 + 19 + 9 + 3

30 + 19 + 3

49 + 3 = 52

So you get 52

I'm getting tired,

I need to do some dishes and some maintenance and cleaning work around the house.

Cya'll and good night.

Good on Jason for providing a little off-topic entertainment.

Here's a little brainteaser. You are at the North Pole. You go south 10 miles, east 10 miles, then north 10 miles. You are back at the North Pole. The question is how many other points on the suface of the Earth can you do the same (10 south, 10 east, 10 north, back to where you started).

If you've heard it before, say so, but don't post the answer.

I heard it differently:

A hunter begins his quest for bear. He travels ten miles south, then ten miles east, then ten miles north, returning to his exact starting point where he saw a bear.

What color was the bear?

I am going to end this arguement once and for all, I did in an earlier post but edited it out because I posted pissed off

On the grid count the “moves” not the points.

4! / (2! x 2!) = 6 possible paths

Here is a “2 by 2” grid.

Image

If we use H and V for horizontal and vertical moves, the possible paths are:

HHVV
HVHV
HVVH
VHVH
VHHV
VVHH

And so in fact there are 6 distinct paths.

I'm hesitant to step into the firing line, but the Binomial Coefficient (which is what jason used) is the standard way to get the solution. I was taught it in highschool (with the same problem as an example), so it's not really "high" maths either.

Thanks for backing me up.. I had no idea about Binomial Coefficients as my math chops and history are quite pathetic.

I just recently taught myself about factorials and while I was trying to come up with a solution for that problem.

Just to clarify.

Your first statement. Learn to read
Yes, Sometimes I am full of shit. Especially after scarfing down some chilly.
I am stupid at math
I did solve the cube when I was 5
I am going into radiology
I actually said I am full of shit and then said i was studying biochemical engineering.
I said I was tired after I solved the send more money problem, which I was, it was like midnight or some crap.

People,

Regarding the number of possible paths on a grid problem:
This is a simple case of a misunderstanding. :)

Jason considers that moves are along the lines of the grid. Hence, number of possible paths is 16!/(11!*5!).
Others think a move is a jump from one square to another. Hence, number of possible paths is 14!/(10!*4!).

Am I right?
