Thanks for the correction, lowem. Oil price changes were often cited as an explanation for stock market moves in the past. Nowadays, oil price hardly seems to be a factor. At this rate, we could be looking at $200 oil and 20,000 DOW in 2008 all thanks to lower US $! :-D

This coming week could be downright hairy. I'm very nervous.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('joewp', 'N')ot only has crude now hit $93.20, but reformulated gasoline (RBOB) is now at $2.29, which is a Summer-like price, and diesel/heating oil is at a record shattering $2.45. Gold is $795 and silver is $14.43. We're watching the collapse of western civilization in front of our eyes.

Don't you feel privileged to witness this historic event? Hope you can keep warm this winter and in winters to come.

Privileged, sort of. It's a bit like watching a slow motion train wreck isn't it?

N.Y. Natural Gas Rises as Crude Climbs to Record $93 a Barrel

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')atural gas advanced in New York as crude oil rose to a record after Mexico shut a fifth of its production.

Crude rose above $93 a barrel as state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, shut 600,000 barrels of daily output as a Gulf of Mexico storm moved through its production fields. Heating oil, a byproduct of crude, also rose, attracting investors to natural gas as a cheaper investment alternative.

At these prices, the US can no longer borrow enough money to pay for its oil imports; so we are printing it. It will not be long before there is no one who will want to take just dollars for oil. That is going to be hairy!

Trying to make people understand peak, always makes me think of this exchange in a Simpsons episode...

Agent: Tell you what, sir. From now on, you'll be, uh, Homer Thompson at Terror Lake. Let's just practice a bit, hmm? When I say,"Hello, Mr. Thompson," you'll say, "Hi."
Homer: Check.
Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson.
Homer: (stares blankly)
Agent: Remember now, your name is Homer Thompson.
Homer: I gotcha.
Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson.
Homer: (stares blankly)
(A long time later)
Agent: (sighs in frustration) Now, when I say, "Hello, Mr. Thompson," and press down on your foot, you smile and nod.
Homer: No problem.
Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson! (stomps on Homer's foot a few times)
Homer: (stares blankly) (to other agent) I think he's talking to YOU.

I've been having that on a semi-regular basis ever since the IEA's "things will be tight from now till 2012"-report, and things are unfolding right now like I feared they would; it looks like 2008 will be the year of peakoil, in terms of peak media attention for it, I fear.

Just in time for Halloween...it might be time to welcome Mr. Yergin to the Cornucopian Cemetery:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he oil market "may be only one or two events away from'' $100-plus oil, Daniel Yergin, chairman of Cambridge Energy Research Associates, said in remarks prepared for a conference today at Georgetown University.
