the freeconomy community - a part of the solution?

Unread postby Satyagrahi » Mon 22 Oct 2007, 11:13:32

My research into peak oil and climate change leads me to believe that both, will a real sense of irony, will kick in at roughly the same time.

Climate change will shake the insurance industry to the core. And as insurance and oil are two of the pillars of our economy at present, I am certain we will see massive repucussions for the global economy.

But its not all doom and gloom! I believe it will lead to the rebirth of community.

But in order for that to happen, we must not only make a transition to a post peak oil world - we must also make the transition to a post peak economy (PPE) scenario.

To help make that transition I have set up a worldwide project called the freeconomy community whose raison d'etre is to help people make the transition to a world in which money no longer means security, but where a diverse skill base in a tightly knit community is seen as security.

Very interested to know your thoughts on this...

My thought is you shouldn't introduce yourself to this group with a plug for your own web site in your first post, no matter how well intentioned.
The battle to preserve our lifestyle has already been lost. The battle to preserve our lives is just beginning.

Yeah I see where you are coming from. Two points of my own though are

a. I don't see it as my site, its the communities and it'll be whatever they want it to be. The site benefits me in no way other than it makes a better world of which i am then part off.

b. Its my only contribution to the world of peak oil to date as I don't have as much detailed information as most of the other folk here regarding it. I've come on here to read read read and offer up the one thing I can so far.

The more knowledgable I become, the more I'll be posting.

But I fully accept your point.

Well, I must say, even if it did read like a spam post at first, at least he owned up to it. That's vanishingly rare. So I encourage you to continue in other topics. Please.

I would suggest to take a look at Rotary Club's founding principles. It is a lot easier to plug into existing networks that are already organized and have critical mass, even to influence them at the local level, then to strike out on your own. Just a suggestion, but there are already a lot of excellent community based service organizations that are active. Even likely in your own community. Volunteers and vision are always welcome. Good luck.
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.
