If you haven't gotten by now, you never will

I found this article very interesting. The implication to me is, that if you see someone who "doesn't get it", they probably never will (because if they were metacognitive-enabled, they would already have "gotten it").

The synopsis is:

"People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it.

Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error.

Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them recognize the limitations of their abilities."

That's kind of funny. I've always thought it was really funny how levels of confidence were way out of synch with the reality. I can remember talking to this woman once and she was going through this long list about all the attributes she wanted in a mate. She was a nice enough girl, but somewhat average. This just strikes me as really odd.

Perhaps you are getting at what Socrates intended when he said that the beginning of wisdom was admitting what you don't know?
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

Really ? I thought he said "I know that I know nothing"

Overall, in my life I've met 1 woman who aknowledged that she is a slut, and 1 man who thought that he has " average'' or a little bit lower intellect.

I know that I know nothing and I mean it.

I remember being a 10 year old snot nosed punk knowing that I knew more than the adults.

I remember being 15 and realizing my 10 year old self was an idiot because now I was a genius and knew more than everyone else.

@20 ditto

now at 29, I have come to know that no matter how much I know now, it will not compare to what I will know 5 years from now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', 'R')eally ? I thought he said "I know that I know nothing"

Yep, that's right. And for the purpose what I said fits. It doesn't detract from the meaning and it conveys the message intended. Translators do it all the time. Conversationally, people paraphrase as a matter of course. Why do you find the need to quibble?
