Fiction stranger than reality: Peak Oil "Game" Hit

Do you have an XBOX360? What about a PS3? Take a look at this:

Here is what Matt Savinar had to say about the game:

These people contacted me in hopes of promoting it on LATOC. It’s basically a shoot-em-up/combat-simulation game like America’s Army or Halo with a plot that the wars the players are fighting are about Peak Oil. So maybe they’re storming an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia in 2015 instead of a space station outpost like they would be in some other company’s game that takes place in 2115 in outer space.

I also think it may be, either conveniently or purposely, a mil-gov propaganda op. If the kids are having fun blowing shit – or getting limbs blown off – in a simulated oil war on their playstation console, they’re much less likely to call shenanignas when the president says “hey looks like we’re going to be shipping folks off to more oil wars.”

Peak oil is a kind of a game anyway. I think it's a good way to get the message out. They used a lot of peak speak. I think whoever wrote the trailer knows quite a bit about peak oil.

I think that this is going to bring peak oil awareness to a whole new group of people. I don't know about the first person shooter aspect, but the peak oil message is pretty clear.

Oil hit $87/barrel this week.

We are on track for $100 by next summer, if not sooner.

The oil war rages on in Iraq.

A game about Peak Oil wars is based on the everyday reality that kids today are growing up in.

Is this a one or multiple player game?

My son and I could team - I could spot and he could smash heads at 700 yards like pumpkins.

What a blast!!

Yeah it looks ok, I can't take another first person shooter though.

It would have been a better game if it was based on the US and just trying to deal with the effects of early PO survival. Like in the first part of the promo.

It could start as normal everyday life then slide into an all out mad dash for survival. That would give the game depth and character.

This looks like more of the same ole just blow shit up.

Sadly, this game will bring the topic of Peak Oil more into the mainstream. If it comes out for PC, I'll try the demo. I don't own any console systems.

What? No Peakopoly?

Is the premise of the video game another stab at indoctrinating people into thinking peak oil is a game, and not real?

So, the game is out. And guess what? It's just another shooter. The oil dynamic is just to give people something to fight over.

I would have gotten it if they hadn't cancelled the PS3 version. Maybe I'll get it for the PC at some point. But I have too many games to catch up on right now.
