No long-term global oil shortage: US

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')HERE is no long-term global oil shortage, a senior US official said in Australia yesterday, on a day when the oil price went almost to $US87 a barrel because of the Turkey-PKK situation.

James A. Slutz, deputy assistant secretary for oil and natural gas, made it clear yesterday that the US position is that any worries about oil supply are caused more by slow technological take-up by oil explorers than by any specific oil shortage.

"While alternative sources, particularly fuel from biomass, and other renewables are likely to contribute increasingly to total energy supplies, the three fossil fuels will dominate for the next 25 years.

Well, that's that.

Gee, what will we all do now that we don't have to worry about peak oil anymore?

I for one strongly support James, and in fact am looking forward to students being forced to keep a straight face while they learn about this brilliant politician.

Go Slutz!

Actually, maybe he'll be remembered for being embarassingly wrong, that would work too.

This is almost as funny as the Dutch Central Planning Bureau (CPB) which claimed as late as 2005 that world oil production could rise without any problem to 155 mbpd in 2050 at a constant US dollar price of 28$pb.

I mean, with such comedians running our official governmental planning agency, who can blame a Dutchman for honestly believing that Western civilisation is going straight to smoking bloody ruin?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')r, as the industry puts it, a low rate of change in the approach to non-conventional oil.

"Globally, oil prices are not the thing that is going to cause us problems," he said. "The key thing is that hydrocarbons are becoming more difficult to develop, taking more time, and the cumulative effect of this is a more challenging supply situation," he said.

ERoEI anyone?

It's time for a detailed study on the scope of energy investment required to develop all of these additional resources. Perhaps then the explanation for the "low rate of change" might become clear.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.
