"What is the future of energy?" CNN survey

Unread postby jbeckton » Fri 05 Oct 2007, 14:08:20

This is a link to a CNN board question-
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/08 ... cnnSTCText

"What is the future for energy? Where will our power come from by 2020? Send us your thoughts and we'll print the best ones here."

I am by no means a doomer but the responses from some of these people show that education is the first step. Most of these people have absolutely no idea what the hell they are talking about.

If these are the "best ones" I want to see the ones that didn't make it.

I can't stop reading them, it's like a car wreck, I can't turn away.

Looks to me like they get worse, the further down the page you go.

Nano, fusion and denial of global warming.

And my personal favourite, creating mini lightning bolts from air.

Makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

Ahhh I love seeing these moments... when a moderate like Beckton begins to understand the real problem... & marches toward doomerism.

After all the technofix arguments & sustainability debates, we are left with a terrible truth.

People.

Don't fear Peak Oil... fear how your neighbors will react to it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'm')ini lightning bolts from air

We are doomed.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Here are a few of my favorite comments:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')o when someone comes up with some kind of a machine or a method to extract energy from a dead body (as gross as it sounds).... it would change the world.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e need to develop new, testable theories to explain how gravity works. Once we know how something works, American ingenuity takes over and the possibilities are endless.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') dream of a day when a gadget linked to the exercising machine will generate and store enough electricity for use in the home.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')uspending high altitude windmills would be more challenging than necessary. It would make more sense to go the extra step and make space elevators.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')ake a look at the universe(nature). If we can harness a sun we have a solution. The solution (imho) is to use nuclear energy, convert it to electrical/chemical energy & rocket the nuclear waste to the sun.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')mplement a cohesive, long-term place for life underwater.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('like_the_dinosaurs', 'c')reating mini lightning bolts from air.

That's beyond pipe dream, that's 100 percent fiction. I want whatever that guy was smoking to come up with "mini lightning bolts from air." That's the kind of thing that Nikola Tesla and John Galt could come up with if they were freebasing.

Here are a few more brian busters...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') have a design for a mountain top power generator that captures lightning and uses the mountain to store the energy like a giant capacitor.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')lectrical power generation will come from nuclear fusion, rather than fission. In 2020, it will not be the dominant source for energy, but it will be a reality...and in 2020, everyone will know it is the future.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')irst, there is no energy crisis, nor is there any evidence of an energy crisis. The United States has vast amounts of coal, can purchase as much oil as is needed, and has increasing natural gas reserves.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e have a couple thousand years worth of uranium,

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')I FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT OUR ENERGY NEEDS IN THE FUTURE WILL BE ABSOLVED BY THE RE-DISCOVERY OF THE VAST SEA OF ETHERIC ENERGY THAT SURROUNDS US AND CAN BE OBTAINED EVEN IN THE VOID OF SPACE. MAGNETICS WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND HOW TO EXTRACT THIS ENERGY. PERPETUALLY....

I thought you were going to save us jbeckton with those nifty solar panels you got there.

Indeed these are the moments. Savor them for the end is near. There will be much wailing and gnashing teeth for the common man when mini lightning bolts from the air don't save us.

The one that got me was the reference to salt water and paper batteries. Geez, it can even replace AA batteries. Zowie!

Like if you took all the AA batteries in the world, what it represent of the electrical powoer used in one day? 3 seconds? 15 seconds? Not sure, but it wold be insignificant, that is for sure.

Considering we are many generations now into the electrical age, the common citizen is no more advanced in their understanding of it than his or her great-grandfather in th early 20th century.

OMFG!

If there was anything pushing me over the edge it is stuff like this. I cannot begin to imagine how monumentally fucked we all are when things begin to unwind.

It is mind numbing, it is sickening, it is terrifying.

We will plummet from the spires of humanity when the lifeblood of modern mankind can no longer course through his veins.

The basic man on the street is barely equipped to get through a single normal day, let alone what things may look like in 15-20 years. Is it no wonder we have so many doomer's here? How can you NOT be one after seeing things like this?

Reminds me of Leno's Jaywalking pieces. Un-be-liev-a-ble!

Come play with this calculator to see how many AA batteries it would take to power your house, or the whole world for a day:
