Are we Doomed?

Unread postby TheDude » Tue 25 Sep 2007, 11:00:49

I read an article like Sustainability, Energy Independence and Agricultural Policy and I think, hey, sounds plausible, that could solve our energy problems. We have more problems than energy, of course, and all of those problems are tied into energy itself one way or another.

So, on balance, given all the articles and analysis we've read, what's your assessment of the chances of industrial civilization carrying on over the next few decades?

I gave four poll options; interpret as you see fit. Somewhat Saved might mean for a select few millions; some might view a Powerdown society as going under that heading.

I occilate between "somewhat doomed" and "mostly doomed" personally. :)

There are many "solutions" available (methods of how to change the way we live to adapt to the changes we're facing) but they aren't being implemented on a large enough scale.

Oh, sorry, I didn't read the details of what's doomed - you mean "industrial society"

No, that's definitely doomed.

Over a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

If you've read "Heat" by George Monbiot and given any decent thought into peak oil theory then you know we're effed in the a. I'm an 18 year old kid with a shitty haircut and my mom washes my clothes and even I understand our situation. Now I'm just trying to find a girlfriend but no girls know about peak oil. Frustrating.

Do you know what it's like to be an 18 year old guy in a college where the ratio is 3 girls to one guy and not find one girl who understands peak oil? I'm hosting a showing of Crude Impact in a few weeks and I hope I will find some girls there who will have similar interest, if not, I'm cracking open the wedding blanket.

Oh yeah, my friend sent me this. This is possibly why the PO Forum is such a sausage fest.
