$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', ' ')I read the story loudly and with emotional conviction. The kids loved it. There were 10 kids and 5 adults. The money they spend on troubled kids is astonishing. But the aides told me that they never listen when their teacher reads. They did listen to me. They were very quiet and I saw their faces. I don't know if it was the story or me, but I think it was both.
It's definitely a talent, being able to engage kids in a story. Not everyone is successful with this. I remember the years my kids were in grade school and junior high, and in our district we had something called "Read-in Week" at the beginning of October every year. I became a regular for this event, volunteering to read to classes of all ages and you wouldn't believe how excited I got about choosing just the right story for each group. I also experienced that quietness you mentioned, and the looks on the kids' faces, and I particularly enjoyed the comments the kids shared with everyone following the story. It's a little like being a storyteller, and an actor, and sometimes even an impressionist, all rolled into one. I guess I really miss it. Sometimes I wonder if the career I chose was the best one for me.
So, PMS, you aren't feeling any more hopeful about where we'll end up, given our world's problems and all? I'm actually feeling more accepting about it all than I was a year or so ago - more of a wait and see attitude, or maybe it's just a change the things I can change kind of thing.
