I'd like to die being suffocated by a mountain of pretty pink panties.

So what else happened at BM?

for what its worth I was one of the jaded spectators this year, I had hoped to see more art meets science at the Green Man Pavilion, did meet an tom kimmel who had an old steam rig there and had an interesting talk with him about a six cycle engine (basically its a regular 4 cycle engine, but in order to try and capture some of the heat energy, the 5th cycle injects water which turns to steam, and the 6th cycle is the expulsion of steam.

They also had a bio diesel benz at the Green Man Pavilion, over heard some people there say wow thats new, that made me laugh cause I've been driving an old diesel benz with kind of the same setup now for 18 years now (since college)

I've been to burning man a few times, and like going cause its a place I don't have to answer a phone, eMail, etc... If ya have not gone, I'd suggest ya go at least once and celebrate the ultimate capitalist counter culture holiday.

There are some very creative people at Burning Man that I've run across over the years and there are some interesting things ya can do at burning man. For example in years past I spend some time with the earth guardians, and checked out some of the surrounding geology, learned how to blow stuff up (in an artful way), got introduced to amazon chick lube wrestling (best damn cardiovascular workout I've ever had), but this year I celebrated being green by being an airport bum...

I go to alot of festivals around the UK every year. Everything from the mega-city fun of 180 000 people in a field for Glastonbury down to tiny 3000 people in a remote vally in Scotland. The first thing I would say is at one point or another I have hurled something similar to just about every criticism in this thread at places like glastonbury over time so I have some sympathy with most of what is being said.

But on the otherhand festivals are primarly about like minded people having fun. I go there to relax, chill out, take a break from the world we live in and regather your strength and identity as a unique person for a few days.

I cant speak for Burningman, but it is always a little rich to be criticising festivals for not being green enough in a world of super markets, package holidays and conspicuous consumption. Well I guess you can point to the consumption of them and tut a little, telling the to raise there game, but they are not really anything like the problem.

In terms of the generational thing, again the UKs experiance is pretty different to the US' maybe. Rave culture in the UK was a pretty big torch carrier for the ecological movement and anti authoritarianism in the 90s. It inspire a great deal of hand wringing and legislation to try to break the scene. Hardly that every rave was some kind of political rally or most ravers gave a tos, but then just how many people going to who bought Sgt Pepers were all that poltically active as well? (Reclaim the Streets and the anti criminal justice bill movement being good examples of the dance scenes activisim).

Many of the smaller UK festivals do a gret deal to allow people who are political active in the enviromental movement or just general left wing politics a chance to get together with outher like minded people and help keep alive the flames of dissent, not so much political dissent but social and cultural.

Random thoughts that probibly dont mean much to Americans.

Nay my friend , random thoughts are an americans bread and butter.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave
