We had a talk last night about her quitting her job, me continuing on in school, buying a little place outside of Portland, growing veggies, being debt-free and sustainable, rejecting 95% of the conspicuous consumption culture that surrounds us, being part of the local political establishment, it was great.

I can't believe I found me a girl that really wants to do all this stuff and leave the rat race behind. This is just a really awesome day for me.

We still want to have nice clothes and furniture and stuff like that, but we don't need the latest plasma TV and whatnot. A cast-iron pan lasts a lifetime. No reason my 1960 AT&T rotary phone won't make it another 40 years. There really isn't all that much stuff we need, so much of what we have is just toys. How much stuff do you really need?

You can play softball with a bat and a ball and four bases. That's all the equipment you really need.

Actually cast iron lasts more than three lifetimes.
I just inherited my grandmothers. she got it from a friend when they were picking through the ashes when their house burned down. when her friend gave it to her she told her it was very old. I'm now the third generation in my family to have it.

glad to hear you found someone who has the same goals and values. that is tough at the best of times!

Its a heartwarming story that you tell, Ayoob. Did you read the tale told by the couple who bought some rural property in Oregon (or was it Washington?) The hayseeds out there were not good people, given to fueds and barbaric behavior. I've said that I like plants better than humans for a reason. You'll be up against impossible odds. This is what's tearing me apart. There's no where to go, nothing to be done. Remember the loving couple on the Titanic in the movie who held each other in their arms while the cold seawater rushed into their apartment? This while the most tender and tragic string music was playing. That's our fate.

You're a good man Ayoob, but I'm done posting for tonight. I'm going to start watching "Gangsters of New York" which I have been told is a good movie.

Ayoob,
Congrats :). Yes, sharing your life with someone who shares your goals and dreams is wonderful. I am in the same lucky position myself. If you two are even half as happy as Carlin and I are, then you'll be blessed.
Congratulations again,
Kathy

Make sure when the World caves in...you can protect your oasis. My bet is... when the day comes those who have done nothing and find themselves in a mess will take what they can from those who have prepared.

Imagine the hordes from the big cities streaming to the Country looking for something to eat.

Imagine how many think they will take a gun and hunt animals for food.

My guess is...after a week when every rabbit, bear, bird, racoon, bug, snail, etc is eaten....only canibals will be left :?

Ummm...people jerky! :-D

That's really cool Ayoob. I hope things work out for you guys. I have a friend that lives in the coast mountains northwest of Eugene. Beautiful country that. Too rainy for me, but definitely beautiful.

As for phones, rotary is definitely cool. I've not had a land line in 5 or 6 years. A high percentage of my calls end up being long distance, so it ends up being about the same cost as a land line. It's much more handy when I get paged about a patient while driving home. Also it's handy in that I move around a lot and I can keep the same number. My current cell cost me $15 off Ebay. Freaks the cellular people out when you bring in a four year old phone to activate service. "uhh...but...gee. I don't know if we can do that. Don't you want the fancy new flip phone with a video camera and a dvd player and a cappuchino maker?" "No. I want a phone. That's why I'm in the phone store not the home appliance store." :-D
