My deep freeze is kept outside for space reasons. I have a 7 foot high fence with wire on top of that. I walked outside this morning and found that someone had stolen over 10 lbs of hamburger, two flats of premade cookies, a large bag of vegtables and various packages of meat, chicken etc.

Whats it gonna be like when the peak happens?

Hideous.
Where do you live?

Here in Maine we use our pantry as our fridge in the wintertime. Luckily, we have a freezer in the cellar, but we've been known to keep frozen goods outside, too.

How the hell would anyone even know you something, given that fence?

Go figure eh? I live in vancouver canada. we are in an economically depressed ares. I don't begrudge the person beacuse I can replace it and they didn't steal our bikes which means they were genuinely hungry. Its also a good lesson to learn NOW. 8O

I'd say that means we (the collective we, I mean) have more in common than in difference.

On the larger topic, sounds like UE needs to invest in a padlock on her freezer.

How do you put a paddlock on your freezer? can you keep its integrity by using screws? or should I epoxy it on?

A padalock can be cut very easliy with a pair of bolt cutters. Bolt cutters are very easy to purchase, and can usually be had for less than $50.00. A far better solution would be to biuld a 10 foot high fence with "no climb" thatching, (gaps small enough you cannot get a foot hold in it), with razor wire slanting outward on the fence to keep persons from climbing over the top to access your freezer. To secure the top, just place regular barbed wire as a ceiling 7 feet off of the ground, on the interior of the cage, with the runs spaced 1" apart, and paint the wire to match what is immediatly below it so it is not obvious that the barbed wire ceiling is in place. for a gate, I reccomend a heavy flat iron gate designed in such a way that there is no way it can be climed, or decended. For locks, I reccomend a double keyway reinforced steel jailer's lock. If you desire additional security, you must also dig the fence down 20 feet below ground level, and use the same techniques before filling in the hole with dirt again. Electrification of the fencing will serve as a further detterent

If this is done, this freezer will be virtually impenetrable from any means a common person would use to gain access. About the only way to compromise it would be to employ the use of explosives, and then they risk destroying the freezer. If somebody tries to dig in, the buried barbed wire fencing will stop them from compromising the security of the perimeter. If they try to climb, the "no climb" fencing and gate will make it very difficult, and the slanted razor wire will be very difficult to pass without severe wounds. Even if they are successful in climbing the fence/gate and adverting disaster at the razor wire, when they jump down to get to the freezer, the barbed wire ceiling, (painted), will make short work of that. This would be the most secure option, as you would have basically created a secure zone for your freezer. 15 armed gaurds working in 5 man teams for shifts of 8 hours would also improve the security dramatically for this situation.

Of course, you could also just keep it in your house too, it would be a far simpler solution to your problem. If you do decide to secure your freezer to make it vitrually impenetrable, then I hope you do likewise with your home.

If you bought the freezer at a local place, ask them about the best placement for a padlock hasp. (Yes, you use screws.) Otherwise, you can install it pretty much as you please, as long as you don't drive one of the screws through a cooling coil. Tough to do these days.

J.B. Weld will work adequatly to secure a hasp to a freezer for the purposes of attaching a padlock. It must cure for 24 hours before it is considered hardened.

Yes, it will cure, but it will take longer. It is advisable to keep it dry, as moisture trapped by the glue will weaken the bond. Temperatures will lengthen the cure time, (up to a week if freezing temperatures), but it will still cure.

Did you check out an earlier thread on landmines. A couple of claymores around the freezer should do the trick and if someone happens to set one off you've got enough burger meat to last a month or two :-D
