How can I make a difference?

Unread postby Searching » Thu 20 Jan 2005, 00:10:05

After feeling really depressed when my Brother-in-law showed me the "End of Suburbia" I wanted to know what I could do to make a difference.
I am majoring in Social Work at University and daily I am reminded as to how sad our society is. I still have hope as I know we are capable of change and we were created to be loving caring people - a matter of choice.
But in scientific terms I don't know where to begin. I religiously recycle and compost but I am not 'science minded' and I don't know how I can better this situation. (Aside from educating others about the reality of what is to come and turning my backyard into a farm).
What can I do?

think positive

Think positive!

Really, you speak of how sad our society is. In the world's history, there has always been that side of things. Always.

But at the same time there is so much that is much more. Look at the knowledge that man has gained. We have learned so much. We are half way to their.

Even IF there is a decline. I do say if! The future is not the past until it has pasted the present. Until it does, we can each make a little change it what the present will be.

Your in social work. So you also understand that we have people (like you) who are out there attempting to make a difference. Each little baby step is another step.

Enjoy today to the fullist!
Peace out!

What you can do? Well, for starters, try to involve more people into the debate. I have my own weblog, crammed with a lot of worthless funstuff, but every now and then i do write about serious issues. A few months ago i wrote about Peak Oil and referred to the well known websites. The amount of regular visitors that emailed me afterwards was surprising, but the comments i got were even better. Some of 'em have started their own little site about the Peak and now give lectures and all that. In my opinion it's a comforting thing to be busy with the issue. Sometimes you can even be so consumed by it, debating with people, writing about it and involving more into it, that by the end of the day you actually feel good for a change, since you finally see the reward of all you effort getting more people into it.

You can start or join an 'outpost' of the Post Carbon Institute.
