Total Information Awareness:The Information Awareness Office

Unread postby Bas » Mon 10 Sep 2007, 18:43:24

From their site (cute url):
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')AO Mission: The DARPA Information Awareness Office (IAO) will imagine, develop, apply, integrate, demonstrate and transition information technologies, components and prototype, closed-loop, information systems that will counter asymmetric threats by achieving total information awareness useful for preemption; national security warning; and national security decision making.

From the Cato institute:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')ohn Poindexter, head of the Pentagon's Office of Information Awareness, is developing a vast surveillance database to track terror suspects. The Total Information Awareness (TIA) system will, according to Poindexter, "break down the stovepipes" that separate commercial and government databases, allowing OIA access to citizens' credit card purchases, travel itineraries, telephone calling records, email, medical histories and financial information. It would give government the power to generate a comprehensive data profile on any U.S. citizen.

Any of you conspiracy types interested in this? It seems like a very real threat, as in it being the perfect tool for an Orwellian, totalitarian regime.

Well, Poindexter is no longer the DARPA chief, so I'm sure everything is OK now. :)

So DARPA spawned by the DOD back in the 50's which gave us the great internets and spawned IOA which in turn spawned TIA run by a man everyone can trust, John Poindexter. The TIA attempts to detect thought crime but has since been replaced by the Multistate Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange, also known as TIA2 or the MATRIX, with involvement from another man we can all trust, Jeb Bush. The program has spooked some states such as Utah, which have pulled out of the program.

The Protect America Act 2007 with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act combine to allow the MATRIX to spy on anyone, anywhere, anytime without oversight but the Patriot Act 1 and 2 had already taken care of those problems so it really doesn't matter what Utah and other rouge states do.

Oh yeah, there is the Terrorist Finance Tracking System which will take your money away after the Threat and Local Observation Notice (TALON) system flags you for protesting the Iraq war.

So for every program we now know about I suspect 10 others we don't know about.

I have a anecdote here. I had a neighbor in my apartment who I had run into enough times to say "hi" once in a while. One day I ran into him outside my office tower and attempted some chit chat. He ignored me and kept walking. Turns out our tower housed a federal intelligence office on the top floor, unlisted of course, and later figured out he must work in it. He didn't tell me this directly and several times after he ignored me at the tower but would make small talk around the apartment. I never asked him what he did for a living and he never asked me. A lovely world isn't it!

If true, he made an error in ignoring you.

He should have acknowledged you in a normal and neighborly manner with a fast "gotta run, busy day" smile.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.

Interesting indeed. Here's a recent article I found chillingly informative.

Big Brother Democracy

Alex Jones has the right idea there. Awhile back, another poster mentioned the Tolkien motif of the eye of Sauron as being prescient and advised staying "out of sight", so to speak. I agree.

I'm not very knowledgable about this program, but I did read they dropped this logo after protests that it was "too masonic"

however, am I right in assuming that this program, after it's birth jitters, has continued under a cover of secrecy?
