Those evil technocapitalist pigs over at Wired Magazine have teamed up with LivingHomes.Net to create the solar powered home of the future.

It even comes with a BMW Hydrogen 7 - the first luxury sedan with a hydrogen combustion engine.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his $4 million modernist home in an exclusive enclave of Los Angeles allows luxury and the environment to live
together in harmony.

Is there need to elaborate?

Not much of a need, but there's a joke inside a joke in that sentence, reminding me of those Russian dolls, yet with a stupidity theme. "Harmony" would indicate some kind of equilibrium, whereas the ideas presented there about luxury are opposed to that, being derived from the consumption engine that is quite out of harmony with the environment.

Wow. What's more quintessentially American than wanting to have a luxury lifestyle AND to be able to say you are helping the environment?

Sigh.

If I had 4 million dollars, I could build one of the largest sustainable farms in Georgia...and still have about three million left.

Nobody needs 4 friggin million dollars to live more sustainably. In fact, many of us would be better off with less- less money, less consumption, less stuff.

Having said that, if I could trade some of my crap for land in the country, I'd do it. As it is, I am working and saving towards that goal in the intermediate term.

Having just spent the day splitting firewood, I might trade my place in the country for a swank LA pad and a BMW 7 series...oh wait...then I'd have to live in LA. Pass.

I hope that this kind of stuff trickles down to "normal" home design the way AC and indoor plumbing did. If you take zero energy into account when building, its a ton cheaper than retrofitting it.

Not really, even this supposed good news is actually more fodder for the doomer porn archive.

Hey, it's in L.A.

$3 million is for the tiny piece of land on which the house sits.

$125,000 is for the environmental impact studies for building "non-standard" housing.

$75,000 goes to permits.

$100,000 is to bribe the HOA into letting them build it.

$250,000 is the builder's profit.

$150,000 is the "California markup" on the materials.

$300,000 is the actual cost of materials and labor anywhere else in the country.

Which is still ridiculously expensive.

A solar and "green" house simply need not cost so much. I don't see the helpfulness in promoting such expensive solutions.

Uhh, no thanks.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hey will also have to endure a string of inconveniences - ranging from the explosion risk if the car is parked inside a garage, to the lack of luggage space caused by the massive hydrogen tank taking up half the boot.

You guys don't even want solutions. It's hilarious.

I post about a solar powered luxury home and instead of focusing on the solar power solution you say it's a luxury home therefore it's too expensive. I can see the Doomer slogan now: "Saving the Earth; it's too expensive." But what will the environmentalists say? LMAO.

I post about a hydrogen car that works and you say it's too dangerous, but driving a gas powered car on the road is totally safe and without risk right? The engine takes up too much trunk space and it's an inconvenience: the horror!!! LMAO

Why not post about affordable solutions, then, Offshore? Why not post about the solutions you yourself are implementing, like a lot of other people here on the board do. That would be a lot more helpful and give you more credibility than posting about a luxury home and then claiming people aren't interested in solutions (which certainly isn't true).

So buy a cheap solar powered home like some of the above posters suggest and instead of buying a BMW buy a Toyota. It's really not that hard to figure out.

So what was the purpose of posting about the expensive home? What were you hoping to achieve with the thread?

Just curious......

(BTW, I have a Toyota, but I don't have a cheap solar-powered home - yet)

Of course they dont....
Its the age old "technology wont save us" argument. Even tho technology has been "saving" us ever since humans invented the spear and the axe to hunt with. Without technology, we would have died out milennia ago. The idea of dieoff and armageddon is too sexy to let go, even tho we are at least 2 years past peak and none of this has happened yet....

[quote]

Not a law but a methodology - namely to look at the 'true' environmental impact of a product you have to assess also the amount of energy used in manufacture, servicing, disposal, etc. Not that a hydrogen-powered BMW is 'wong' because of its fuel - but simply because it is a BMW (grin).

Wow. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I didn't know that technology saved so many people! Now I can go home and skin a saber tooth with my bare teeth and fix everything :)

pstarr, technology saved people who were yet to be born, thus illustrating that we have the ability to alter our environment. It saved countless billions.

We can always invent our way out of it and save countless billions.

We invented the plow
