$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'T')he avatar must be less than 145 pixels wide and 97 pixels high. What can you do?
You can download this nifty little freebie shareware photo editing program:
PhotoFiltre 6.2.7

I wrote up a little instruction blurb for family and friends (some of whom are real beginners...) a while back, but the forum software won't let me post the whole thing. I'll post it in parts if the mods don't mind:

"PhotoFiltre" Instructions:
PhotoFiltre is a free-download shareware photo editing program. It's way more than capable of doing most of the digital photo editing we need to do. Here's how to do the most common sort of editing tasks:
(Note: The "Undo" button is the red u-shaped arrow in the top toolbar. Keep in mind that this program will only undo the last four commands, so proceed with a bit of caution.)
Cropping:
Open the program and click on "File", then "Open", and browse to the pic you want to work on. Use the zoom-percentage drop-down menu in the top toolbar to give you the view you want. The <Auto> selection zooms to fit the whole image in the view window.
Note the toolbar on the right side of the screen. At the top, just below the color pallet, is a white box with a cursor arrow in it. Always click on that to escape any task you are doing and return to using the standard cursor.
To crop a photo, just click on the rectangle at the top of the lower group of buttons in the side toolbar. Now click and drag across your pic to create a rectangle around the area of the picture you want. Release the mouse button and click anywhere inside the rectangle and drag it around to position it exactly where you want it to be. Move the cursor to the edge of the rectangle and a black double-ended arrow appears. Click and drag the edge of the rectangle to make it any size you want.
When you have the rectangle sized and positioned as you want it, right-click inside it and a menu appears. Click on "Crop", and the unwanted part of your pic is gone. Click File and "Save" or "Save As".
Re-Sizing:
Most cameras save the pics as huge files. That's fine for making very large prints, but it is completely unnecessary for viewing on a computer, and it makes the image file very unwieldy and cumbersome for e-mailing. Re-sizing the photo makes the photo image file far smaller and easier to manage.
To re-size, simply right-click inside the photo you have opened (as above) and click on "Image size". A menu window opens showing the current dimensions of the photo in pixels, and the size of the file in kilobytes (Kb). Make sure the "Preserve aspect ratio" box is checked, then in the "New size" area, enter a narrower width. Generally, 500 pixels or so is a good universal width. That makes a photo very e-mail friendly, while still being more than big enough to preserve its image quality.
Try different widths and see what it does to the file size. Look at the difference between 1500 pixels wide and 300!
