It's a safe bet that Mr. Daniel Yergin still wants money for that.

It's a PBS documentary series and it has been available on google videos for three months. The book btw was published in 1990; it's google's legal responsibility and I'm sure they'll remove the vids when asked to, so get rid of that silly FBI thingy. And why are you playing the corporate troll?

It is not in the public domain.

I’m reacting the same way as if I saw a person stealing property from my neighbor’s house. Sure, it isn’t my house, and securing it is my neighbor’s legal responsibility. I’m pointing out that it isn’t free for the taking, because you don't seem to realize. And because if you are stealing from my neighbor you are only a few steps away from stealing from me.

Trolling for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting? That would put me in good company with Fred Rodgers. I agree that the book and miniseries are fantastic, and worth watching. The people who made them deserve to be compensated for their valuable work.

apparently it is in the public domain, and if it shouldn't be, I suggest (If you don't want to come off as a hypocrite) you warn the correct authorities about it (as I would do when I saw someone stealing from my neighbor)

So we've got it narrowed down to an Is-Not/Is-Too argument. I am not an intellectual-property rights lawyer, but my understanding is as follows:

I expect that the book will remain under copyright until either 2086 (1991+95), or 70 years after the death of the (currently living) author. The film might extend a few years later. PBS (a private corporation) normally rents broadcast rights to the individual broadcasters, for a specified period of time. They don’t give it away for free. The content creator (possibly a 3rd party under contract) normally retains their rights, and may then rent the rights to someone else, perhaps in another format.

This film series could be in the public domain if the owner gave it away using a “copyleft” type contract. Do you have special knowledge that this was done?

I believe you posted it in good faith, without meaning harm. I should have used a silly looking pirate.

cute dog, and I'll admit that copyright is a gray area on the internet and by no means settled; BBC struck a deal allowing youtube to host BBC content for example. The rule here is that you don't advertise torrents and similar sharing mechanisms but that you are allowed to post videos hosted on google video or youtube and the likes (as those are easily removed by the copyright holders if they wish so). We don't host copyrighted material here at peakoil.com unless you count the quoting of entire articles by some members which then have to be shortened by us moderators : z
