The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Alas... this multimillion project has been beaten by a semi-amateur with a few thousand dollars of equipment. :-D

But you're right. It is a terribly impressive craft. It would do well as a front yard ornament.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smiley', 'A')las... this multimillion project has been beaten by a semi-amateur with a few thousand dollars of equipment.

The boards have always been faster than the boats. They've held the 500-meter record for a couple of decades. Hardly the same thing, though. Note the venue: A special ditch dug just for the record attempt, to ensure perfectly-smooth water.

The amazing thing about l'Hydroptere is that it could eventually beat the boards and hold the sail-powered record outright, and it's doing it in the open sea, not some special ditch dug just for it. In a match race in the open sea between l'Hydroptere and the board, who do you think would win?

By the way, here's the English site:

l'Hydroptere

I love the control stations out on the wings. Very cool.

They're going for 50 knots. I'm sure they'll get there:

Vive la France!

Good god. 45 knots in a powerboat is fast.

And no, a windsurfer beating a sailboat is not that interesting.

Surfer probably and kite surfer definitely. The kites have been doing 49+ in open sea on production boards. I have little doubt that they break the 50 first.

Here are some open sea (unofficial) numbers:

Max speed

1 Martin van Meurs 49.20 knots West Kirby
2 Finian Maynard 48.76 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
3 Dave White 47.90 knots Southend-on-Sea
4 Antoine Albeau 47.41 knots Tarifa, La Jaima
5 Tony Wynhoven 46.70 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
6 Mal Wright 46.55 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
7 Ben van der Steen 46.44 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
8 Steve Thorp 46.00 knots West Kirby
9 Bob Cunningham 45.80 knots West Kirby

500 m average

1 Finian Maynard 47.08 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
2 Dave White 46.21 knots Southend-on-Sea
3 Mal Wright 45.03 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
4 Ben van der Steen 44.49 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
5 Tony Wynhoven 43.80 knots Sandy Point, Victoria

speedsurfing

Well a couple of years I back I'd say that real men surf and that sailing is for preps and oldies. But that was based on my experience as a kid in a plastic tub with some sort of handkerchief as sail. Even my slowest board will run circles around that and will probably jump over it.

However last year I had the opportunity to get on a real racing boat (Withbread30) on open sea. That day we had a 6 beauford gale. I have to say that that changed my view on sailing somewhat to say the least. It is terribly impressive stuff these guys pull out there.

But despite my newfound respect for sailing, old habits are hard to change and I can't keep myself from making fun of the sailing community sometimes. So forgive me for that. :-D

Coolest... Sailboat... Ever...

A prairie schooner?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smiley', '.')..open sea (unofficial) numbers...

We sure do have different definitions of "open sea":

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')inian Maynard 48.76 knots Sts Maries de La Mer

That's the ditch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-LSS4qVXYA

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')ony Wynhoven 46.70 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
Mal Wright 46.55 knots Sandy Point, Victoria

Sandy Point

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hree kilometres east of Sandy Point lies a river inlet known as Shallow Inlet. This sandy, tidal inlet is a popular fishing spot and a famous area for windsurfing. A speed sailing record was set here in 1993.

You gotta be kidding about these:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')teve Thorp 46.00 knots West Kirby
Bob Cunningham 45.80 knots West Kirby

West Kirby is a lake:

[url=https://www.wirral.gov.uk/LGCL/100006/200079/823/content_0000685.html]The West Kirby Marine Lake is a man-made salt-water lake, 52 acres in size and five feet deep meaning that it is an exceptionally safe learning facility.

Because the Lake is shallow and has strong prevailing winds, it offers an unusual and valuable combination of flat water and high wind. Speed sailing events used to take advantage of these conditions, but they have been discontinued.

From the Speedsurfing web site:

Near-glassy water a few yards off the beach is not open sea. This is "open sea":

I was a sailboarding nut from 1981 to 1992. I finally gave up out of frustration with the fickleness of the wind. Come on, don't be silly. There is no way speed boards can even approach 40 knots when the seas are running a bit. Heck, 30 is tough in meter-high waves.

Like jboogy said, apples and oranges.

12 years later and it appears Universal Studios is still in the hole for making Waterworld.

Still a fast boat is a fast boat. I got my sea legs 20 years ago racing sloops. It's selfishly fun to dominate a regatta. Any other sailors out there?
