$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '

Surfer probably and kite surfer definitely. The kites have been doing 49+ in open sea on production boards. I have little doubt that they break the 50 first.
Here are some open sea (unofficial) numbers:
Max speed
1 Martin van Meurs 49.20 knots West Kirby
2 Finian Maynard 48.76 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
3 Dave White 47.90 knots Southend-on-Sea
4 Antoine Albeau 47.41 knots Tarifa, La Jaima
5 Tony Wynhoven 46.70 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
6 Mal Wright 46.55 knots Sandy Point, Victoria
7 Ben van der Steen 46.44 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
8 Steve Thorp 46.00 knots West Kirby
9 Bob Cunningham 45.80 knots West Kirby
500 m average
1 Finian Maynard 47.08 knots Sts Maries de La Mer
2 Dave White 46.21 knots Southend-on-Sea

speedsurfing$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd no, a windsurfer beating a sailboat is not that interesting.
Well a couple of years I back I'd say that real men surf and that sailing is for preps and oldies. But that was based on my experience as a kid in a plastic tub with some sort of handkerchief as sail. Even my slowest board will run circles around that and will probably jump over it.
However last year I had the opportunity to get on a real racing boat (Withbread30) on open sea. That day we had a 6 beauford gale. I have to say that that changed my view on sailing somewhat to say the least. It is terribly impressive stuff these guys pull out there.
But despite my newfound respect for sailing, old habits are hard to change and I can't keep myself from making fun of the sailing community sometimes. So forgive me for that.
