Keep in mind that song was written in the mid-60s when the oil party was still on the upswing. And, The Who all had parents doing their laundry and keeping fish-and-chips or toad-in-the-hole or whatever it is they eat over there, on the table. The Mods vs Rockers thing was going full swing, the The Who was adopted by the Mods. The Rockers were guys who were into 1950s rock and roll, working on their own motorcycles, wearing the same ol' leather jacket until it was nice and oil-stained and battle-scarred, that's when it was just getting good! They drank beer and ate pub food, same as their "granfers" would have in their day, in short the Rockers were about the good old days. The Mods were different though - some thought the name came from Moderns, and they were HUGE fashion nuts. They'd ostracise any who didn't show up with a whole new wardrobe every so often, emphasis on the Often. It's really wild to read about these guys, imagine a bunch of guys acting like Britney Spears and her puerile crowd. It was all about fashion, EXPENSIVE custom clothes, and how much friggin' bling you could put on your scooter. Also, new music which had to be bought as compulsively as the clothes and scooter-bling.

So, mods vs rockers was consumerism vs traditional working-class values.

The mods tended to be headed for college too, or at least something that would get them into the middle class or perhaps even better. The rockers basically just wanted to ride, listen to their treasured Gene Vincent records, wear their comfy old jeans, and work as a pipefitter or something.

Now, personally, I've always liked the mods better because I think scooters are underappreciated and I like the Mod bands better than old 50s rock and roll. But from a PO perspective, the rockers come out looking much cooler and the mods come out looking like the evil little shitheads all modern "consumers" are.

I guess if it actually comes down to a contest, the main question in my mind is this: are the post-30's capable of treating the pre-30's with the same level of a sociopathic lack of compassion that the pre-30's would likely treat them?

Aside from a small fraction of kids that the new agers refer to as "indigos" (highly intuitive/intelligent/insightful kids that make the rest look like lower primates), I can see a lot of these kids being ready, willing and able to throw grandma under the figurative bus if it means they can get something out of it.

Since I'm 42, I have vested interest in being more than a bit wary of the little creeps.

The one saving grace (as mentioned before) is their general state of spoiled cluelessness.

The big test (overall, for everyone) will be if/when the electrical grid goes down and stays that way. That is when the big Darwinian Death Stomp begins. I think that would be just about what it would take to wake the majority of them up. Parents spend so much time and effort trying to insulate their kids from BIG SCARY REALITY these days, I doubt that they would have a clue about what is happening until it's way too late to manuver in any meaningful way.

Which give nasty old bastards like myself the upper hand.

:)

It's all good (as the kiddies say...)

I am 17.

I would see my whole generation of yuppie, consumerist morons starve if someone over 60 could eat for day.

I really don't want to be stuck with generation me when the crash comes, fast or slow. Do you want to be with someone who's more concerned with their iPod's remaining battery life than food? Older people tend to be more pragmatic.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')side from a small fraction of kids that the new agers refer to as "indigos" (highly intuitive/intelligent/insightful kids that make the rest look like lower primates), I can see a lot of these kids being ready, willing and able to throw grandma under the figurative bus if it means they can get something out of it.

If they are really that insightful, killing someone useful over the longterm to temporarily enchance short-term prospects proves they are no better and no less self-centered than the lower primates...

Or on government handouts.

Yeah, right on dude. How you young folks gonna make it in the future without those wonderful pension plans, SS & medicare handouts........

Age 40 is not old. I was still a kid then & could complete pretty dang well with 20'ish types in any sporting competition.

Simple.

Work 'till death. :(

I think there's always a way around things. Keep telling yourself - how can I get ahead in this carzy-world, how can I get out of debt or avoid it.

Maybe look into working for the Government at the State or Federal level in a rural area. Good pay & benefits with lower housing costs than Metro areas. If'n I was young again, thats the route I'd be taking.

Rockers - Moderns

Interesting.
