Damn, you never messed around as a kid with various feathers and things making pens? We will never ever lack for pans and pencils, you can literally write with, and on, just about anything. You can use clays and combinations of clays and lead, use just about anything for ink, various feathers and split reeds and things, it was a fun thing for kids to read about and learn about and experiment with if you're old enough to be born in the 60s or before, I guess after that, writing by hand was really de-emphasized.

Don't worry. We won't run out of pencils and pens.

No worries. I'm just wondering which people think will be more popular. :-D

It's hard to say.

Pen = any liquid with some color to it + dispenser
Pencil = any kind of marking clay or chalk

Remember that in the dieoff, we're going to lose 90% of the population and there's going to be STUFF to last the remaining 10% for a few generations. Along with everything else, there will be discoveries of cases of Ticonderoga #2's and abandoned stationary stores will have their stocks of Higgins black.

We won't have to make our own for a few generations seriously, but there will be pockets of innovation here and there, you gotta write something you gotta write something, and a crow quill, assuming you've read about how to make a pen out of one, and some dark berry juice or lampblack'n'water will work fine.

Why go backward to pens and pencils?

I predict in the post-Peak world we'll all have solar powered laptops tied into low-power regional wi-fi nets so we can keep up with the latest predictions of doom on that great website: "Post-Peak Oil.com" 8)

And I predict we'll have an Earth that's blooming again because there will be no roads, since Steorn-powered "George Jetson" cars will carry us all, including our superintelligent dogs and cowgoats, which will give ice cream.

Lead rods work just fine, even though they never were actually used in Pencils in the past. We had one when I was a kid, a sharpened lead shaped like a pencil worked just fine writing on most kinds of paper.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I was kind of hoping that all our nuclear powered flying cars would have inbuilt computers that had voice recognition and were also attached to personal 3d printer in the glove box
So you could just say I need a pen and a notepad and it would be instantly manufactured for you to use.

I've already made the changeover and print my resume on birch bark using squirrel blood.
