Peak Oil "Whackos"

Unread postby Bas » Sat 14 Jul 2007, 07:36:00

just read this article:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ARIS (ResourceInvestor.com) -- As we have made clear many times in this column we hold little truck with many of the whackos who inhabit the wondrous world of ‘Peak Oil’. Yes, despite the title of the column. No sooner do people start talking about energy supply crunches, plateauing production or acreage inflection then a host of bedraggled crazies rise forth from their graves to tell us a number of scary items.

Firstly, we are often told humanity is going to “die off.” What a great idea. It could almost be a book, or a series of books and a website. Oh wait. It is. Like an energy-related version of the film 28 Days Later. Every lazy person around the planet can argue how many people will be alive in 2050 or 2100 and no one can prove them wrong. Ker-ching!

And it goes on.....

Kuebler-Ross' 5 Stages of Grief :
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

Looks like this article floats somewhere between steps 1 and 2. :)

Somewhere between 2 and 3 is where it will start to get ugly.

I replied to that article but not sure if it will be placed, as I wrote that the author of the article apparently doesn't know anything about resource depletion and overpopulation and the seriousness of these issues, and that he therefor should put a sock in it.

The law of supply and demand has not been repealed.

As the supply of a commodity goes down, the price goes up.

The price of oil continues to go up.

He definitely seems to be in agreement with us, but when you write for Resource Investor, you can't exactly be telling people that the world can get fucked up pretty easily and deeply.

They also say non-OPEC supply growth will be just under 1 million barrels per day in 2008. But then they are getting 2007’s figures so wrong at the moment it is difficult to trust them on anything as regards production.

They should really add that the major oil companies predictions on their own production growth have also been wildly over optimistic. The only significant way that major oil companies have been able to add production is by buying other oil companies.

He never really gives any reason to be optimistic. He just lashes out against PO and says it's BS meanwhile he gives us all of the reasons in the world not to believe a word that he nor any other optimist says.

Savinar commented, too. Turnips, mmmm.

You look at all the countries that have peaked and how fast they're declining, then figure how much it will cost to ramp up production and how long it'll take - in places like KSA, Iraq, Iran. Forget about "Doomers" if you want, just think of the logistics involved. Throw in geopolitical unrest and the inevitable hurricanes slamming into the Gulf again...bloom's off the rose, dude!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')here is a problem with supplying the world’s energy needs. It is exacerbated by the growth in consumer lifestyles in China and India, but also by the rank wastefulness of the U.S., Japan and Europe which continues apace.

I wonder how the author suggests this is fixed.

The West will slash its per capita energy consumption by an order of magnitude to facilitate the development of the rest of the world?

Please, the situation has us fucked even if peak is when the US EIA says it is.

How about the author volunteers to stand in front of the other 5bn people and tell them we've got ours, now fuck off.

Aah that is the rich, tasty irony of it all - "Fuck You, I've Got Mine" works within American families but not among Human Beings.

I'd be very happy to entreat any of my relatives to let me spend the night if I showed up at their door starving (like they'd not call the police! - but bear with me here) and get the house keys and in the morning open the place up to Mexican hordes who'd rape 'em, murder 'em, and pillage the place. I'd be proud to do it!

Any Good American(tm) with a shred of humanity left in spite of that, would!

Not sure what a whacko is:

One who whacks his or her self?
Whacks others?
Just whacks indiscriminately?
Whacks specifically at what they don’t understand or refuse to understand?

Guess it really doesn't matter...
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

It just means you're whacky.

And in the US, if you don't believe in SUVs, endless growth, Our Beloved Leader and all that, you're whacky.

What a lame article, on so many counts.

It ends by effectively undermining its premise, confirming "there is a problem with energy supply", and singularly fails to address the consequences of this little "problem".
