The spiritual dimension of peak oil

Unread postby KevO » Sun 15 Jul 2007, 13:20:24

I guess there must be one..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')eak Oil is a postive event. Long term.

It is undoubtedly the most significant event in the whole of human history and eventually it will be the best thing that ever happened to humanity and the planet. Eventually is the word though - the long term.

The short term will be messy to say the least and for another 30 years it may remain so as we transit to the real humans we need to be. PO gives the whole world the oppurtunity to live moment to moment which is the only true way to live, in fact it is living itself. We are currently dead men walking, zombies of the materialistic desire we have entrapped ourselves in. Peak oil will show us the light if we are willing to see it. If we fight for a right to continue consuming and looking ‘good’ then we are all doomed and maybe that is what we deserve but if we drop our desires and our attachements and come to realise that we are being given a nugget of gold from the universe then we can all become very rich.

There's nothing more spiritual than being dead!

I doubt someone who has just watched their child die of something minor like a broken leg because they couldnt afford help, or medical care just was not available, would concider post peak some spiritual experience.

I do understand exactly what your getting at but we can also look at what we have now in a more positive light.

Out of lurking mode just to say "Ludi!"
It is easier to enslave a people that wish to remain free then it is to free a people who wish to remain enslaved.

Interesting post, OP.

I agree there is definitely a spiritual problem, but not with what he suggested.

I didn't get that. I got that it's a wake up call, more than peak oil being a spiritual experience per se.

I saw it as more of a wake up and we'll be fine

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e are currently dead men walking, zombies of the materialistic desire we have entrapped ourselves in. but then again, what's 'spiritual' anyway?

I guess he uses the word spiritual in reference to a sacred event, that being peak oil. He has a definate Christian/Buhddist slant to his post on the blog so I think thats where his comming from.
I think he is right that its going to be the biggest event in human history but if you think its spiritual or not depends on if your religious in some way.
Yes the consumerism will be gone but its not something i subscribe to much now so I doubt I will be missing it. There are plenty of things I will miss though and I think a decent level of health care is possibly one of them.
I dont think peak oil will be humanities salvation or doom. There are good and bad things now and to come in the future.

yeah I thought buddhist was his thing to.
As for a sacred event, the future might look back and see it as one if things are better in 20 plus years
