Peak Oil Thesis???

Unread postby Choon » Wed 12 Jan 2005, 03:25:36

Hi, I'm new here, though I've been following the subject of Peak Oil for the better half of a year already. I'm seriously considering writing my Master's thesis based on PO since it's the only topic that I'm interested in at the moment.

But the problem is that i'm doing Masters in Information Technology!! :( My supervisor said that I CAN write about PO, but I'll have to write a program that simulates some aspects of it, then collect data from it. But since PO would affect so much (both globally and individually), I'm really stumped on what to simulate....any ideas? :cry:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Choon', 'a')ny ideas? :cry:

Howard Odum. Emergy. Yup Emergy.

You can find Java code for Emergy simulation on sourceforge. Code has been up for a few months now.

Information has emergy values in the Odum universe, and PO is the end of cheap energy in the form of oil.

Knit together as needed.

Ah thanks. I never tried searching for energy/PO simulations in sourcecode website. Should have thought of that. *slaps own head*

Besides the concept of emergy, I would also seriously consider the IT challenges in configuring accurate peak oil depletion models.

PO model prediction is highly dependent upon fundamental assumptions, so your interest in PO would come in handy with this.
Despite the fact that Dr. Bakhtiari created his WOCAP model to try and address some of the inherent weaknesses of other models (including ASPO's) that fail to address the effects of product switching, demand destruction, forced reinvestment, etc), I still find that model (and others) lacking in a technical aspect.
Your thesis challenge, then, would be to create a model robust enough to be continually updated with new information to produce greater and greater accurate peak predictions...

Good Luck!
