Fuel Vapor systems

Postby synergistic » Sat 14 Jul 2007, 13:43:06

I'm new here so I don't know if this has been discussed before but does anyone know if fuel vaporization really works?
Supposedly there have been all sorts of patents filed that would increase gas mileage to 100+mpg but nothing ever done with them.
I don't know anything about motors so can someone please tell me if these would really work?

No way to get 100 mpg simply by modifying the engine. Even a perfect '100% of Carnot efficiency' engine won't get such mileage in a typical mid-sized car.

Only way to get 100 mpg, is to make smaller cars with better aerodynamics, special tyres, etc. Although several manufacturers offer hybrid cars, part of the apparent fuel savings, come not from the tweaks to the powertrain, but from more attention to aerodynamics and tyres.

Scammers and deluded 'inventors' have come up with all manner of schemes to supposedly improve combustion in a gasoline engine, by atomising or vaporizing the fuel. As it is, the current technology of multi-point fuel injection is pretty much perfect. There is no room for improvement, at least for the fuel delivery system. After all, why do you think the car manufacturers are tinkering with ludicrously complex systems like variable valve timing and displacement - it's because all the low-hanging fruit in the engine bay has already gone.

Fuel Vapor news

The eVaro will be the entry in the XChallenge and will go one sale after the challenge. No word yet on MSRP. With 135mpg/e the Varo has a good chance of winning.
Fuel Vapor has the capacity for production of 3000 cars in the first year and plans to expand as demand increases.
