I'm not seeing a meltdown locally, but that's because where I live, things have already been dead for at least 5 years. There is reason that science fiction film makers love using St. Louis as a post apocalyptic backdrop. Some areas of it resemble the worst parts of Detroit.
While in college, I tried finding a job the whole time through without much luck. Now I have a degree, and I have offers all over the fucking place.
Can't wait to find that engineering job and get the fuck out of the city. That'll happen in a matter of months, if not sooner. Hell, I may even move out to gg3's area. I cannot stand cities; too many people, too much surveillance, and the police here are pricks.
Whatever the case may be, at least there is a demand for people in my field and will continue to be one, even in a depression. There will likely even be increased demand for people in my field in the near future, due to the energy crisis that is unfolding.
Want a good future during the PO crash? Get into alternative energy, and get the hell out of any area in or near the ghetto.
Other areas that will remain in very high demand are oil, defense, aerospace, and electricity distribution.
The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the old growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder. ~Thomas Jefferson
