The Long Walk

Unread postby Narz » Tue 10 Jul 2007, 20:03:33

By Stephan King.

Great book, I think alot of you doomers would really like it. It's depressing but overall it's got a good message I think (enjoy the moment while it's here). King's best, IMO, and also one of his earliest.

Anyone else read it?

btw, it's not at all supernatural, I find his best books aren't (except Firestarter which was also good).

Nothing to do with peak oil really but a good commentary on our sick society and I'm sure the more creative among you can draw parallels with the story's plot and the fate of nations. :)

Read it quite a few years back. I liked how this book covered so many deep issues on so many levels, though the ending confused me. What really happen to Garrety?

The ending was confusing and a bit anti-climatic IMO. I don't want to give me opinion here though because I don't want to spoil the story for those who haven't read it.

I am a big fan.

If it has been out for a while could someone give a quick plot description so I don’t go and order one I already read?

Yo Pops.... pop your curser a few times right there. It's a nice, although not perfect, summary. Great book. I have a copy at home, along with most of S.K.'s books.

Just read the wiki. Wow. 8O

BTW skipping of all things, can be amazingly restful and effective for covering ground, as a break from a trot - not sure how good it is to vary a walk.

Scary huh?

Our King (Hubbert) and Steven.

I hadn’t seen this one, but I don’t like the different worlds stuff so much; dark tower and all that.

But because I have been told I look like SK several times I can see why he chose the pic of Mr. Bachman someone directed me to.

Dang, maybe I could have a portrait made of a pseudonym Pops!

I wish they'd make a movie of it. It's more relevant than ever in our age of reality shows. It's just too dark and too violent. Would probably never happen.

BTW, the wiki for the book has way too many spoilers. I wouldn't read much past the first paragraph if you haven't read it already.

I just re-read this again a few weeks ago. This has been one of my favorite stories by King since I first read it in '86. Great characters and dialogue.

Actually I think all the Bachman Books are especially relevant for PO'ers.

Rage: highlights how some people might behave when forced to deal with a situation completely and totally outside their normal routine life.

The Long Walk: All the Walkers are those of us that are PO-aware... realizing that most of us are going to die and figuring out how to come to grips with it.

RoadWork: Excellent portrait of a man who cannot come to grips with the world changing for the worse around him. Great 70's oil-shock references, too. :)

The Running Man: A very logical extension of today's Reality Show concept and the struggle of the Have's vs the Have Nots. Not hard to envision at all.
