Live Earth

Thought the Foo Fighters were very good.!

On a more serious note it was good, certainly at wembley, there was a strong emphasis on the issues of population growth and oil consumption. I am not in the evangelical camp of this will change 2bn peoples lives but hopefully it will help make issues such as climate change and PO easier to bring up in conversation.

I doubt it.

Itulip is presenting "The Great Global Warming Swindle" on its website (in 10 minute intervals).

The fact that one set of Contrarians would so quickly pick up another contrarian cause without verification shows how easily the global warming movement can be divided and disputed

I haven't watched the 'Swindle but from what I saw from that segment, I must say I'm actually disappointed that the Itulip crew would display it, let alone endorse it. It really brings into question their integrity that they would show such an obviously flawed argument (complete with manipulated graphs of the Medieval and Holocene warming periods)

If educated critics will buy such tripe so easily, then obviously there is no hope of anything productive being accomplished before its too late (an synonym of the Peak Oil debate)

i voted "none" but wish to amend to a "a little"...

a little worse.... as it will just piss a load of carbon into the atmosphere for no benefit and a crap rock concert... yes even the concert was rubbish.. a profile raiser for dying acts.. fuck the lot of them. if the actual event had been enjoyable or even vaguely memorable the cost vs benefit ratio may have be tilted back towards the none category

the time to do NOTHING is at hand

I think that with this issue, that is hard to deal with, an event like this and of this scale was inevitable and a result of it's long and over the last couple of years fast evolution. Ofcourse there are not direct effects in a reduction of emissions, but I do think it goes a long way in an immaterial and immeasurable way; the bringing together of the world and moving it closer to consensus and eventually worlwide steps to combat this unprecedented environmental problem.

It was a show of force of the environmental activists (This was by no means the work of Gore alone, at all) who are well aware of the political difficulties that surround combatting the problem of climate change, but they seized the opportunity now the issue is finally in the mainstream to set up a global event that in it's kind is unrivalled in history. It shows the strength of the world wide environmental lobby, that they have the public on their side and that they mean business; and there's no politician in the world that can ignore these 2 billion votes of no confidence, it has them thinking, hard.

And with this I would like to change my vote from a little, to more than you can possibly imagine.

Unfortunately votes dont mean much in a Police State.
Ride your bike to work while Formula One is on.
Mad-dona has $2.7 invested in some of the most polluting corporations in the world. See pagesix.com
Most of the has been acts just wanted exposure to the world market and a feel good- I'm helping the earth feeling. You could tell because not one had any kind of an environmental song. (except maybe the Black Eyed Peas who just had written one.)
Turn off your lightbulbs while we drop another million tons of uranium bombs on some country to get their oil. So that we can ego trip our way to the concert in some 4x4 or some other gas guzzeling truck. Except the ones that came by lear jet.
Go outside the stadiums and see how many bikes are there.
How many people went home and planted a tree?
How many went out into the forest, if there are any left in those areas and thought, this planet is my home for now, how can I live on it without exploiting it.
Mad-donna is probably the only one who went out and hugged a tree, and that was because after humping a guitar, her backup dancers, and everything else on stage, a tree looked good too.
So in conclusion, as the lemmings go flying over the cliff they look down and say, here comes the rocks and water!

That would make a great laugh of the whole thing.

Kind of like the pics of garbage after the Live 8 concerts

I just can't believe it!!!

Unread postby Judgie » Tue 10 Jul 2007, 21:29:55

Three major storms, flooding in two states, a grounded ship 20 metres from the beach, and 3 years of drought (hang on, apparently thats over, even though much of the runoff never ended up in the reservoirs), and so many people either still don't believe climate change is real, or are unsure.

I have to agree with a few of the contributors though. Live Earth was little more than a glorified publicity drive for the performers, and a big party with good music, food and cold beer as Lance put it, for the masses.

Interesting... one of the commentors threw in a plug for dieoff.org... and got slapped down by a technofixer later on.

So many GW deniers out there! But some good comments too... My favorite comment was from the guy who watched the show, then cancelled his foxtel subcription and sponsored three African kids instead...

Me, I don't do much TV these days, so I only caught a couple minutes of some teeny bopper diva onstage, while we were picking up the puppy from a friend's house. I wasn't too interested in the show (although I will have to find some clips of yusef stevens).

On the live earth site (liveearth.org/event), the purpose of the concert is said to "bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis." I guess the question is how successful it will be in this goal. I am all for spreading the word and trying to change minds. Can a concert do that? Or is it just more tons of garbage on the face of the earth, and the rich go home a little richer?

Next best comment:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') am sure it has been a bit cooler the last few days. Is there anything a couple of pop concerts can't fix?

I only heard what my sister-in-law told me about the event...she watched some of it....not to thrilled by the music choices.

After looking at the bands, Live Earth comes down to corporate bands/artists...playing an event sponsored by corporations. Not of interest to me or most people I know, but to the rest of the world...these bands are popular to many many people...so it's not a bad thing if you are trying to reach a few billion folks with a message about GW.

As to how many of these people viewing actually make life changes that will leave less of an imprint on the planet is hard to tell....my guess is not many. Hope I'm wrong!

The Great Global Warming Swindle is a great movie, I support what they say 100%. If your in Australia, they are going to show it on ABC.

P.S. While I must admit to still have a bit of faith in bands like Beastie Boys (NYC punk roots), Red Hot Chili Peppers (LA punk roots), and Foo Fighters (DC punk roots)......I would never venture to a stadium to see these bands....having seen these bands in basements and small halls back in the day, I'm spoiled!

Including the obviously altered (incomplete?) data of historical temperatures.

here's the true graphs at wiki

100% support you say? Good call.

Yeah... a great piece of science, as in science fiction.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.
