Apologies for the appauling french.

http://www.coshoctontribune.com/news/st ... 49485.html

If more articles like this start appearing, those who know about self sustaining technologies, homesteading etc. may rapidly become the gold dust of society.

Perhaps those who take some initiative and plan for the future will survive and those who stick their fingers in their ears while driving their Hummers will be an anthropologists joke in the future.

"As nice as the ride may be, if the car you're in is accelerating towards a wall you should forget about it and bail, as hard as the fall might be its nothing compared to hitting the wall"

You americans have an advantage over us brits if you set up these communities: when WAL-MART has to close down and the morons start coming to try and steal what you've carefully built (dawn of the dead style), thanks to the NRA's love of death you'll be able to defend your territory. Us in the UK would have to rely on the police, and they'll probably be the front row of morons. I'd move to an island off scotland if I thought the polar ice caps would stay where they are, but fat chance of that, specially since coal is about to become big business again.

Are our kids gonna be proud of our endeavour and resourcefulness, or are they going to chastise us for giving them a choice between drowning, dying in a war or starving? If peak oil becomes any more of a blatant reality without societal action, then its about time people started realising that society isn't acting in their best interests. Revolution means going round in the same old circles, its about time we had some evolution.

insofar as a society can "act" as a whole, western society acts in the best interests of those who have the most power (and i don't mean energy, though they do seem to go hand in hand). as long as the power structure remains the same, western society will always act in that manner.

I had to vote yes to this because I presumed the definition of interests was keeping their oil powered lives going by invading other countries. If you meant our interests as in our collective interest to carry on surviving in the long run then definately not.

Deconstructionist - Yeah thats one of the things I'm worried about, that those who deserve to suffer the most for their power to act combined with their inaction, will be the ones who dont suffer because of how their greed-gotten wealth will help them go somewhere else or build their bunker etc. Not fair really. Twats.

Stu, I did mean survival, personally I'd rather be alive and living off worms in a cave than dead in a SUV in a suburban house!

K9P? - "YOU appauling English"??? "WHILSE you are at it"??? "Daff"???
I'm perfectly prepared to apologise for my appauling english, but not to you, moron!

Rickenbacker - you are even dumber than I imagined - the spelling was a joke - geddit - a bit of irony and a bit of self-deprecation. Try some...

Oh yeh, and 'geddit' means 'get it' old boy - just in case you don't.

Rickenbackup - You mean you wish you knew what you were talking about. What in hell's name does that sentence mean? Is English your mother tongue or don't you have a mother, mother? :)

We don't care about his english pinhead ( I woz born in lundin and thankfully left before turning 3)

At least he has something to say. You don't.

I wish we would all just ignore guest trolls.
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us. What shall we do to be invoked; to be remembered in the earth.
We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
So let us try to make obedient respectful beings who shall

skiwi - sure, I was winding him up, that's because I couldn't understand what the hell the sentence I quoted meant. He's talking, yes, but he's not talking any sense. As you're so clever, and the guy obviously needs someone else to stand up for him, perhaps you might explain what this means:-

RICHENBACKER "If peak oil becomes any more of a blatant reality without societal action, then its about time people started realising that society isn't acting in their best interests."

Generally, I ignore the idiots but this was too tempting once he'd revealed he was dumb, thin skinned AND lacked a sense of humour.

"If peak oil becomes any more of a blatant reality without societal action, then its about time people started realising that society isn't acting in their best interests."

I would have thought it was pretty easy to understand, but just for you I'll try and expand on it a little.

http://www.peakoil.net/Newsletter/NL49/newsletter49.pdf

Look at the ASPO results (heres a link to the latest newsletter, theyre up the top) of the second page. Suggests peak oil will occur around 2008. Even if thats a pessimistic figure, the data would suggest that its going to happen in our lifetimes. The effects of peak oil are disputed but few believe there will be no detrimental effects.

So basically we are heading for a problem, and if we do nothing about it this problem could be a crisis. The leaders of our societies, politicians and business leaders, wh are in the position to start reducing our reliance on oil, are not even acknowledging peak oil as an issue, though some are:

http://www.epolitix.com/EN/MPWebsites/M ... 68D3BD.htm

If nothing significant is being done to reduce the impact of peak oil on people like you and me, then those who run our societies are ignoring a problem that could become a crisis due to their apathy. Thats why they are not acting in our best interests and why I, personally, would like to see a bit more revolutionary activity. Even if that revolution just means loads of people giving up their cars. Or trying hard to combat the apathy, which is what sites like this are for. Everyones got a sense of humour, but I tend to go to funny sites for my funnies, and stick to informative, thought provoking sites like this for information and thought provocation. Perhaps you'd consider giving it a try.
