What do you WANT to happen?

Unread postby Narz » Sat 07 Jul 2007, 14:50:13

Everyone has their opinions on what they think happen but what, ideally, would you like to happen?

Please post why you voted as you did too.

Enjoy & may all your dreams come true (or maybe not). :)

I voted Solution/business as usual.

Why would I want things to change? Human life doesn't get much better than this.

I can live whatever kind of lifestyle I want. If I want to plug myself into 24 hour entertainment and never spend a though about where the basic requirements of life come from, I can do that. If I want to drop out and live on a homestead, I can do that. If I'm not an extremist, I can do a little of both.

My options are nearly unlimited. Why would I want less options?

I voted other. If we want to be realistic in our desires, I can't support technofix/business as usual. I'd like to, but have to agree that there is nothing currently available, nor anything coming down the pipe, that gives the same energy density as easily as oil.

What I would like to see, is mankind changing its behavior through education. Through sensible policies widely adopted, and attrition of our overshot population through natural death and sensible reproductive practices, I would like to see a planetary population more in synch with living within the carrying capacity of the planet.

I would like to see more long term planning, and investing in our living systems, and transportation and agricultural needs. Getting away from the consumerist paradigm that currently seems to hold sway would go a long way to mitigating the potential for a hard crash. Demand for speed, and excess, and minimum dollar expenditure is what has driven us to the profligate use of our resources, and their inevitable loss.

I'd like to see us continue to advance in science and art. I'd like to see us shed the bonds of our planet, and reach for the stars. I'd like mankind to rise above our petty scrambling for cash, and become custodians to the universe, in a constant quest for understanding and beauty.

But I started out saying I wanted to be realistic.

More options doesn't necessarily equate to more happiness

and nice vision Dave. If more people had one like that and acted on it (instead of just living day to day we wouldn't be in this mess.

I voted for: Involuntary (for most) powerdown.

Since I'm in the first world, I don't want things to get too bad here.

But having a lot fewer people around would be pleasant. Letting the pruning occur among those who inhabit the third world seems like an ideal way to proceed.

I guess I am in the other.

I already did something about too many people around though; I moved.

I’d say I want:

A reduction of US parents spending $50k on first birthday parties.

A realization there is only so many people the planet can support.

A resurgence of personal as well as societal responsibility and respect.

A relocalization of farming.

I voted for the zombie scenario. Detox is painful. No sense dragging it out. Just get it over and done with.

Detox is a great analogy, in the spirit of the op what kind of detox do you want? Heroin detox, which only makes you want to die or Alcohol detox which can kill you? Or meth which makes you want to mostly sleep, eat and cranky enough that you may kill someone else?

Involuntary powerdown for me, too. All living generations in the US need a good slap upside the head, to prepare for a low energy world we're likely facing.

I'm with Pops in re: beer. Want to relocate to a small town with a brewery.

I WANT an army of monkey butlers to appear and do my every bidding.

Yes, I want monkey minions, and a LAIR. You know, the Evil Mastermind kind of lair.

My monkey butlers will build it for me. That's what I WANT to happen.

Seriously though, what I want is irrelevant. I don't control reality.

I voted for No. 2, looks like most people voted for No. 3.

Difference is, in No. 2 most everyone pulls through, learns to become non-assholes, and pulls through by "needing" less and lessened birth rate. Society changes.

In No.3, dieoff is in the 3rd world, you know, mud people, those niggers. Also, slopes, gooks, sand niggers, beaners, etc. No statement whether society changes, so let's assume it's more a dog-eat-dog scenario and society in the 1st world does not change, pressure is just relieved by all those Untermenschen dying.

Yeah, I know, I should go out and get some picturesqe tattoos now so at least my skin will make a good lampshade.

You control your own reality. Not absolutely of course but, while you may not be able to much influence global outcomes you can certainly influence your own.

Question for people who voted zombies. Why? Do you really think all that suffering/death (on such a large scale) is inevitable? If so, why?

I am actually torn between the two extremes. I would like life to continue, with small, gradual changes that improve life for most of humanity, and the environment. I really would like that.

But there is another side of me that wants to see it all flushed away, and find a mountain top to view it from. As long as I am not caught in the tide, I would really like to see that. Wishful thinking, I know. There is no escaping this tide. No one gets out alive, I am afraid.

Maybe I am just very callous, and impervious to all this. Modern society as it now stands does not appeal to me a whole lot. It's an unfinished work in progress. And I don't think it ever will get finished. Running out of canvas and paint.

I took door number 2, Monty. I would like to see societies shift away from the current paradigm of growth, growth, growth.

However, I don't believe that is humanly possible. It's just not in natures to voluntarily say no to things.
