I spent the 4th of July with Kids and Guns

Postby TommyJefferson » Fri 06 Jul 2007, 15:40:02

On the 4th of July my brother-in-law hosted an extended family get-together at his lake house at Lake Livingston. I rounded up all the kids aged 7 ~ 15 and taught them shooting and gun safety.

I took all the kids down to the boat dock and let them use my air rifle to shoot dead fish and big white mushrooms. We spent four hours down there and they loved it!

Several of those kids had never pulled a trigger before. I drilled and drilled into them the NRA Gun Safety Rules http://www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp

A chorus of cheers would go up when one of them popped open a floating dead fish and caused it to sink. I gave them a long lecture why it was WRONG and immoral to shoot the ducks unless we intended to eat them.

I encourage each of you to purchase an air rifle. An air rifle more accurate than you are can be had for under $200. Pellets cost $0.01 each.

If the opportunity presents itself, you can be ready to teach some young ones riflery and gun safety without the hassle of a trip to the gun range. This helps reduce the irrational fear the public has of guns. An armed populace is a safer and freer populace.

It will make you feel good. It could save a kid's life. Plus, it's a heck of a lot of fun.

You realize that the vast majority of us will never have the kind of wealth you do, to have things like "relatives", "lake house" or "boat dock" right?

Good job on teaching shooting/safety though!

It's been that way for five thousand years. If that history is any indication, the world will probably be that way for a long time after you and I have returned our nutrients to the earth.

That being the case, you can deduce how to be in the top half and work to do that, or you can choose not to.

Personally I have lived on the bottom of the bottom half and did not like the unhealthy and dangerous nature of it. I prefer health and safety even if it does take more work to acquire.

Just figured out who you are over on GT. Glad to see a familiar face and congrats on getting the next generation started on the right foot. Unfortunately, I think they are going to need these skills even more so than most.

Hard work has only gotten me further behind, a LOT further. I was better off, seriously, when I worked for min. wage at the lowest skill possible.

I intend to do as little work and be as little "use" as possible in the years I have left, if there's any way I'll have anything close to what you have, access to things like free time, boat docks, etc., that's how it will happen.

What?! No childish name calling, ad-hominem attacks and rich white kid self-flagellation?

You are falling down on the job Pstarr. Huge quantities of raging hysterics about returning lead to the ground from whence it came would be more appropriate. You fail us. I'm disappointed.

Hard work is only half of what it takes (and the less important half at that). It's much more important to work smart than to work hard. If you don't figure out how to work the system then the system will figure out how to work you.

Now if we could just figure out how to sequester all the lead solder in you computer you wouldn't be a hypocrite.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f you don't figure out how to work the system then the system will figure out how to work you.

Which is precisely why the best solution is to work outside the system. Not everyone has the assets needed to work the system. Vast swathes of the population are left behind with little prospects of molding their own reality due to factors outside of their control. A lucky few with these assets parrot how well the system works, because it's working for them even if to the obvious expense of everyone else.

Our founding fathers understood this all to well and it is a tragedy to bear witness to these problems having gotten exponentially worse since their time. They didn't want an over-populated surveillance state where rule of law is disproportionately applied. Our founding fathers didn't want a society where money buys all the freedom and privacy a person could afford. These attributes of our society actually run contrary to the laissez-faire society envisioned by the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin, and their kind. Freedom is supposed to be intrinsic. If the system doesn't want to change, stop trying to change it. This tactic has been tried for decades and doesn't work when the system doesn't want change. It needs to be torn down altogether by any means possible. Our founders got the hint.

I celebrated my 4th of July the way I wanted. Never harmed anyone or anything, but a few men in suits and badges with guns would have loved locking me up for daring to assert the freedoms that are intrinsic and of which no written law should ever be able to deny. Freedom: assert it or lose it.
The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the old growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder. ~Thomas Jefferson

I was curious about that as well. They may have been dumped. Sometimes people catch fish and just dump them because they are too small to mess with or they are lazy.

The heavy rains may have also caused some problems. It can turn the lake over bring up suddenly cold water. It can feed in oxygen-sucking algae and do all kinds of other weird things.

I heard the fishing has been terrible because of the rains.

Yes indeed, I have not known how to work the system hence the system has worked me.

Most middle-class people are scared to death to "live poor" they've never patched their clothes or cooked up what they have at home, etc. I am unusual in that I have lived that way and am not so afraid - in fact once I understood peak oil and that Progress is a false idea, at least consciously I know that living "poor" is a virtue.

So, I do not greatly fear "living poor" for a year or two or three, while I get this debt-cloud taken care of. Rush Limbaugh is wrong; the Indian mystic out in the woods is right.

Now about that lead - yes metallic lead is a problem. You can build .22/pellet traps or buy them, Gehmann is a good brand. Target shooting and plinking use up a LOT of ammo, and that lead in the form of pellets and in the form of the stuff that rubs off inside your barrel and spits out (a little stays in which is why you have to clean it once in a while) into the atmosphere, becomes a problem.

Good to trap that stuff if you can.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'p')urchase an air rifle

We have one of these at our house, and the offspring have been instructed on the proper use and care of this valuable tool, however, out here in Suburbia, you are subject to double secret probation or something if the homeowners association finds out you are shooting something in the backyard.

One of the less discreet neighbor kids was running around the other day with one, and it caused an uproar: the leader of this uproar was a lady who was afraid that her 19 year old might get hurt by this thing.

Never mind the fact that this 19 year old is theoretically old enough to be shipped off to Fallujah to operate the real thing.

You just have to shake your head.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') do sequester the lead in old circuit boards by delivering them to recycling centers.
