SF Bans Bottled Water

Associated Press

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
') SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Is city water better than bottled water? Mayor Gavin Newsom thinks so.

Newsom has issued an executive order banning city departments from buying bottled water, even for water coolers. The ban goes into effect July 1, and will extend to water coolers by Dec. 1.

Good for them.

Exactly.

And if you want to find out what the bottled water conglomerates think of their customers, just spell EVIAN backwards.

Yes, that's right: NAIVE.

AS for me, I drink what comes out of the tap, which is pretty damn good around here.

Don't let the bottled water conglomerates convince you that we can abandon public drinking water standards and buy their stuff for a buck a quart or whatever-it-is.

The only place for bottled water is on the road, or in a temporary public health emergency. Otherwise, if your local drinking water isn't up to safe specs, it's time to start making whatever political noise is necessary to get it fixed.

The worst tap water I've ever had by far (in the U.S.) was Myrtle Beach, SC. I think the Arlington water is pretty good. It's the same source as DC, but probably different treatment from there.

ArlCo has been on a push to limit bottled water as well

War on plastic.

The newspaper is kind of in ridicule mode on it at the moment.

btw, I posted this article because it has a direct relationship to oil. Plastic bottles are made from petroleum, (if you didn't know that, then you must be a young child,) and the plastic bottle is a symbol of our dependence on oil, or perhaps more accurately, our dependence on convenience, and this is just one item of convenience that I think people in the future will have to do without.

you can poo poo bottled water all you want, but the truth of the matter is many municipal water supplies are tainted with heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, and other chemical pollutants. We can water our garden extensively with city water, and it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference. One good rain and stuff absolutely explodes with growth.

South Dakota has by far the worst tap water I've ever tasted. Horrible alkaline stuff. Tastes like somebody stirred a tablespoon of powdered chalk into your glass.

I drink the tap water here in Southern Utah but I'll be damned if I ever try to susist on tap water in places like Southern California or Florida, most places really. Amazingly New York City has some of the best tap water in the country.

I'd recommend at least a Brita filter wherever you are, humans aren't meant to drink water laced with chlorine and fluoride and run thru miles & miles of corroding pipes.

Some 9-10 years ago, in a city still filled with heavy industry factories built in communist times, i've had the pleasure of finding that not even soap wanted to dissolve into tap water, so i had to rinse my hands with sparkling mineral water from the store

I've never heard of such a stupid (Coke/Pepsi motivated) ban in my life.

Bottled water is a great convenience and easy to store. The reasoning for banning bottled water to stem global warming is ridiculous, Coke, Pepsi, Gatorade… Please! You can refill the plastic bottle with water over and over! duh... I pay the $1.39 for the plastic, not the water.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Gideon', 'O')nly in America -
We have extremely clean, well regulated water supply all over the country, and people spend 1 dollar a bottle for water.

I put the kibosh on that crap in my house about 6 years ago.

"I'll be God damned if I'm going to work so we can buy water when the stuff coming out of the tap is relatively free."

Of course there are some cities with water that is awful.

DC comes to mind.

NYC gets its water from the mountains. My house, because it is a mile from the border with NYC's queens borough, gets its water from the ground. It is a bit shallow though. It then runs in rusting pipes. Yummy. I'd rather take my chances with bottled cancer/gene splicing solution (diet coke) than tap water in quantity.

I'd run it through a brita filter and drink it though.

Despite the thread title, they didn't ban bottled water. What they banned was using city money to buy it. I support that. The mayor's staff can buy their own water if they want it. Why should the tax payers have to buy it for them?

The water in newport beach is horrible - it's even bad for your plants. The water here where I am is ok, the water in Hawaii is nice, it just depends on your area. But a filter is better than buying it in bottles.

Thanks for pointing that out smallpoxgirl.

I would think San Francisco of all places would encourage the use and reuse of bottled water only because if a natural disaster took place clean water would be the best item you could have available. I wouldn’t depend on city water if I lived or worked in an earthquake prone area.

I lived in a small town in northern Arizona for a few years, and it had the best tap water I ever had.

Now that I live in Florida, I use a reverse-osmosis water filter. The tap water isn't bad, but any water containing chlorine and fluoride in it needs to be filtered.

Running coke though a brita filter! That's the funniest and best idea I've heard all day!

But seriously, I used to live in a town with poor water quality nasty cloudy stuff that would settle on the bottom of your glass... And my mother in law lives in an area that has rotten egg sulfur water, you wash your hands with the stuff and you want to wash your hands! Their's a water treatment system that can fix that, but her husband is a sick bastard who won't get it fixed... One time he made lemonade out of the stuff! :P

So there are cases where bottled water is appropriate. But also I agree with everyone, that in general the water we have in this country is great! And buying water in sterile yet chemically nasty containers is not a good idea, unless you have to. And yes, chlorine and fluoride add their own kind of nastiness... So I lean in the direction of filtered tap water. And that post about filtered coke is just too funny!

Bad idea. Apparently the cheap (disposable) plastic in most bottled water will begin to leach toxins into the water if reused too often.

There is a reason quality plastic bottles cost ten times as much as disposable plastic bottles. You get what you pay for.
