$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'I') tried this on a whim this morning at a store. Many people in there and I asked the cashier, 'what would happen if we couldn't get any oil? no more gasoline?' There was quite a buzz and everybody spoke at once. It is definitely in the public mind I would say. Forget the nuanced arguments about EROEI,
keep it simple. Folks know how vulnerable we are. Danger perception is in our genes.
You're lucky nobody declared you to be a witch or a heretic.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', 'I')t just makes me think - if Joe average, in other words, everyone in the store, understood all the implications of oil depletion and how quickly the North American way of life could be turned upside down, would they justify the above thinking and send their sons and daughters to war and not let the civilian casualties in the ME affect their conscience.... or, would they be willing to embrace a 3% reduction in oil use per year, as outlined in the Oil Depletion Protocol (Richard Heinberg).
Certainly the PO crowd here are among the few that realize why we have no choice but to remain at war in the Middle East. (If we want to maintain the status quo.) The average person out there might actually have a conscience which would not allow them to send their children off to kill other people just to steal their resources and enforce our monetary hegemony. To the average person, that's the same as admitting to being the bad guy, and stupid people don't like being the bad guy. The current administration has the stupid people believing that we're actually defending freedom and doing the right thing--fascism at its finest.
I'm partly hoping we get a bleeding-heart liberal in office in '08, just so such a thing
happen. We'd need a Pelosi-style liberal who would pull our troops out just for the sake of bringing them home, without giving forethought to the global outcome of such a decision. America's quick exit from the Middle East would bring about a faster crash than the current game plan will.
