What we have here, is failure to communicate Dub Taylor in Cool Hand Luke

Stick with this kid. He's a loser George C. Scott in The Hustler.

Take your filthy paws off me you damned dirty ape Charlton Heston in Planet Of The Apes

Badges!? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!!" Alphonso Bedoya in The Treasure Of Sierra Madre.

plastics Murray Hamilton in The Graduate.

I simply love movies. They are right at the top of my list of things I will miss post peak, next to food and toilet paper. Whereas the production values of the Renaissance were grand paintings done by crews led by masters, in our time it's movies. Rubens would be astonished by a movie such as Blood Diamond. Or for that matter, Ben Hur, done a generation or two ago. Of course, then we would have to show him The Dukes Of Hazzard.

I love the V for Vendetta 5th of November speech. The delivery from the actor was amazing and that tirade is absolutely brilliant:

Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot.

I watch Three Kings 2 or 3 times a year, loaded with great quotes.

Archie: No unnecessary shots, Conrad, 'cause we know what they do.
Conrad: Make infected pockets full of bile, sir.
Archie: That's right, Conrad, that's what they do.

Conrad:Troy gave me this haircut. It's badass!

Conrad Vig: Blacks make better receivers than quarterbacks.
Troy Barlow: Stop speaking right now, Conrad!

Archie Gates: Any questions?
Conrad Vig: Yeah, is it true to be special forces, you gotta cut off an enemy's ear?
Archie Gates: [to Troy Barlow] Are you able to control him?
Troy Barlow: Yes, sir. He'll be fine, I promise

If Tom Paine was right about the ancient Hebrew prophets having actually been poets, and their having given voice to the collective feelings of the time and not really stating the word of God, but rather stating the projections of the populace of those days, then movies would have to be our worship. My all-time favorite movie is Titanic. Next to that is Braveheart with the memorable line:

Nicolette: Englishmen don't know what a tongue is for.

Man, True Romance is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It has many excellent quotes. Here's a quick link to some of the better ones.

If you liked "V" then check out Equilibrium.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]DuPont: And you, Preston, the supposed savior of the resistance, are now its destroyer, and, along with them, you've given me yourself... calmly... coolly... entirely without incident

Preston: No, not without incident.

...

DuPont: Wait! Wait! Look at me. Look at me. I'm life. I live... I, I breathe... I feel. Now that you know it... can you really take it? Is it really worth the price?

Preston: I pay it gladly.

I'm watching the movie with Robert Downey playing Charles Chaplin. They are talking about America. Chaplin, a British immigrant, says that America is a good country underneath. The Hollywood guy says, 'no, it's a good country on top, it's underneath, that's where we start showing that we are scared'. The context was communism, which was a huge bugaboo in those days, strange how it has all played out.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')on, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Probably the best single cinema scene ever IMHO

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

Blade Runner - Rutger Hauer

"Thomas Listen. Listen. There are times when life calls out for a change. A transition. Like the seasons. Our spring was wonderful, but summer is over now and we missed out on autumn. And now all of a sudden, it's cold, so cold that everything is freezing over. Our love fell asleep, and the snow took it by surprise. But if you fall asleep in the snow, you don't feel death coming. Take care."

Jerry Maguire:

I will not rest until I have you holding a Coke, wearing your own shoe, playing a Sega game *featuring you*, while singing your own song in a new commercial, *starring you*, broadcast during the Superbowl, in a game that you are winning, and I will not *sleep* until that happens.

Conan The Barbarian

"Steel isn't strong boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; that beautiful girl. Come to me my child..." She obeys him and falls to her death. "That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?"
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us. What shall we do to be invoked; to be remembered in the earth.
We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
