Clueless in Atlanta: Gas price $6

Unread postby MC2 » Thu 21 Jun 2007, 12:10:00

This is rich. The AJC has posted up an editorial that includes this juicy little quote from a Heritage Foundation report: “A review of S. 1419, including the just-completed section on tax changes, reveals that the bill could increase the price of regular unleaded gasoline from $3.14 per gallon (the early May national average) to $6.40 in 2016 — a 104 percent increase,”

Amazing! Someone actually thinks the U.S. won't see 6 buck'a'gallon gas until 2016!! Hell, we'll be lucky to not see 6 bucks before 2008 or 9! People in most of the world are already paying that, or more. Drudge has picked up the story and is running with it. Actually the big complaint seems to be that extra taxes will be used to fund alternative energy programs. Horrors! Let's just plug along until all the friggen gas is gone. No need to take any measures to prepare for such a day.

I've been wishing they'd put a buck-a-gallon tax on gas, and I'm a Libertarian!! We've got to do something to slow down consumption.

We should encourage mindless consumption among those who've not a clue. The time for evangelism is past. For ourselves, it's time to make our move to a gridless, self-sufficient lifestyle.

Well, with just 5% inflation, $3.00 gas becomes about $4.50. So an extra $1.50 isn't that much of a deal. Only an extra 33% over inflation. We'd be extremely lucky to have something like that.

Very few are going to succeed alone. We need everyone, even the unwashed masses. At the very least, we need them to be informed and literate about the issues. If they are not, their void of ignorance is going to be very easily manipulated by those attempting to grab power and assets. People will not understand what is happening and why, and that lack of knowledge will be used by the devious and malevolent to pass an assortment of fascist legislation. Some of the greatest tragedies in history have been helped along by the easily manipulated ignorance of the masses. If we don't at least inform the average person of why things are going to get bad, there's no telling what the consequences could be for those who think they are prepared. There will not be enough people with enough understanding to oppose the ship of state being hijacked and taking everyone, informed and uniformed, for some kind of hellish fascist voyage into an oppressively feudal future from which no one can escape the misery. Ignorant masses will just let it happen because they won't know any better. They'll go along with what they're told by the elites that want to consolidate their positions because they're scared and uneducated.

It is very disconcerting that both the left and the right are acting like a bunch of idiots regarding this issue - so the truth isn't getting out. The left is going to war with "big oil" while the right is putting the blame on the "envionmentalists," or Opec nations, or whoever. I suppose it is easier to blame than to deal with the truth. But, I fear that the public will just line up with which ever side they support and never really understand what is happening.

Politicians in our system can't tell the truth about peak oil and continue to have political careers. So they will of course find some other "reason."

Yes, I think that is probably the case - if they even understand it themselves, but it is too bad.

This is the biggest news story that ever happened. Interested to see how they are going to deflect things now...

I imagine it will come out eventually, it already has to some degree, it just seems people don't want to except it - to difficult. By the time everyone understands what is happening, and that it really is happening, it will probably to late for much mitigation - especially here in the US where we are very attached to our high energy way of life.
