The Grapes Of Wrath

Unread postby I_Like_Plants » Mon 18 Jun 2007, 02:01:44

by Steinbeck, of course!

I took the day off and read this - wow.

If you have not done so, read this and pay attention.

We are not under that much a different culture than back then, hell Bank Of The West which has a branch just up the street is mentioned.

This book deserves the Nobel it got. After that, everything is an anticlimax, or worse - don't even bother reading Travels With Charley, what pap.

I'd consider this to be on the must-read list for every Peaker.

...except that back in the 30's they were discovering the largest oil fields the world would ever see.

I love Steinbeck.

Grapes tells my family history pretty well - to a point

Ditch bank Okies is a badge I don’t mind.

I’ve read Grapes, The Pearl and Red Pony more times than I can count, Pastures of Heaven at least three times.

Kind of ties into the hope for depression threads.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
-- Abraham Lincoln, Fragment on Government (July 1, 1854)

Here's an academic work re: the great depression
http://www.amazon.com/Great-Depression- ... 009&sr=1-1

Let's see; a real estate bubble burst by the Miami hurricane of 1926-a stock market bubble driven by buying "on margin"-corporate takeovers-maldistribution of wealth-overproduction---

At least in 1929 we had "hard currency" and consequent deflation. This time fiat money, so look for hyperinflation.
