I tell myself daily that I don't know how it's going to unfold. It's sort of a coping mechanism. But I don't see that 'real leadership' happening because I don't believe there is a solution and thus the sham will continue. Really, here we are at this late stage in the game and the leadership wants to turn food into ethanol. The writing is on the wall.

Your arguments are reasonable and certainly within the realm of possibility carlhole, I also kinda hope your right and we all come out smellin' like a rose.(I got it pretty good). But the pragmatic side of me says PMS is dead on, I've seen NO evidence of either the will or ability of men/woman to take ANY steps to soften the impact of the coming shitstorm. Besides that ,if mankind continues to destroy the planet I'm kinda hoping mother nature gets fed up and bestows a rightous ass-whooping on us regardless. I'm kinda wishing alot of these evil pricks that are screwing everything up get wiped out. Is this wicked of me?
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

Well, if it comes down to dire straits for the human race, I'm pretty that science has been able to modify the smallpox virus to be super lethal, permitting NO unprotected survivors.
If people were cannibalizing each and burning every last tree and trashing the planet, you can bet your ass that a killer virus or several of them will be released.
People with power would simply calculate how to do away with such a destructive excess of population. Some sort of new equilibrium with the carrying capacity of each region of the Earth would be sought.
But, that's kind of an extreme. Probably, as oil and gas grow scarcer that heat and pressure will be turned up quite naturally on everyone to arrive at viable solutions. It's like pitched war - people become extremely inventive during crisis. They exceptionally brilliant during times of high stress.
And all it takes is for one mind to conceive an inkling of an idea. That idea is passed on to other brilliant minds and sparks new ideas which get passed around... Who was it that said a date with the executioner concentrates the mind wonderfully?
I would sort of expect that some sort of die-off is likely but that a new human-environment equilibrium will result. It's just like a forest fire wiping out dense and stunting old growth.
I surely do not expect that people will forget about technology or science and go back to living like the Amish. That's seems like a very childish notion to me.
You have to wonder: In the absence of oil and gas entirely, what number of human beings living on the planet would enable the culture to continue advancing in scientific/technological knowledge and living very well? But then, you know, oil and gas will never 'entirely' run out. It has not been proven impossible that advances in energy science can be made.
So what number are you comfortable with? 500 million? A billion?
Life could be good for them.

Given the conspiracy theories about the Illuminati seen here by a prominent member and the slogan 'annuit coeptis' meaning 'He [God] is favorable to our endeavor' which is on the US dollar bill and the theme of this thread, may I propose another peak oil Latin slogan: non annuit coeptis. That gets the dark theme across pretty well I think.

There is a lot of Latin in the medical language, which I come into contact with daily.

How many times in history have societies just thrown up their hands and walked away from difficulties which may have seemed insurmountable; rather, I think we do work harder for solutions when they are required for our survival. For most of us, our current level of wealth (compared to those who are truly poor) has made us apathetic and turned our brains to mush. For that reason, I have to give a plug for the powerdown, Oil Depletion Protocol people.

I have no problem with your views on that as they are at least trying to do something about it. But no one seems to be listening. The decision makers and politicians are doing what the people want them to do which is keep the cars running, whatever it takes. It looks like they'll keep on trying to do that until we drive right off the cliff. Here's something I'd like to know about: what do Congressman say to Roscoe Bartlett?
