WWF says no peak yet

Unread postby whatpeak » Thu 14 Jun 2007, 10:01:26

I attended a training at work on climate change given by a representative of WWF. In the Q&A, I asked him for his opinion on the impact of hydrocarbon depletion on reduction protocols. He was familiar with Peak Oil and thought that global peak hadn't been reached yet. Then he added that there was plenty of oil reserves held in tar sands of Canada and that with the current price of oil, it was economical to extract oil. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to follow up with question about EROEI.

I was somewhat surprised by his cornucopian response. [smilie=icon_scratch.gif]

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('whatpeak', '.')..Then he added that there was plenty of oil reserves held in tar sands of Canada and that with the current price of oil, it was economical to extract oil.

The myth that the tar sands will be our salvation is very widespread. They'll learn. Reality will intrude soon.

I found out that the main reason nobody believes in imminent peak oil is the lack-of-investment argument. Given the fact we had crushing low oil-prices in the 80's and again in the 90's, MBA-touting accountants fired most of the E&P personnel in the big oil companies in favour of more MBA-touting accountants which has made it almost impossible to ramp-up oil production this decade.

All the former E&P employees are now self-employed contractors costing twice as much which makes every invested $ only go half as far. Probably 9-10 colleagues I talk to that ridicule peak oil outright agree that lack of investment is the *only reason* we have limited oil supply at the moment. If I would even *hint* that I take imminent peak oil seriously I would probably be fired instantly for being a lunatic and a doomer. Luckily for me, there is the online PO community!

Probably the WWF guy is a player who knows he cannot openly take PO seriously, because then his name would also come on a black list and he would not get access to the big corporations any longer. You should have asked your question in private and then you might have gotten a different answer.

Also, never openly admit or suggest you believe in peak oil, unless you are a pensioner or are rich enough to survive without a job, or unless you don't have an energy related job to start with and have no ambitions in this sector of course.

Unconventional Oils explanation is the card that most major sources play, when questioned hard about conventional peaking.

If one doesn't follow minor sources and "alternative" points of view, one doesn't know anything about unconventionals.

To them it's just "more stock". Problem solved.

They do not understand the concept of "flow".

Net energy? EROEI? Not on the radar...

Don't be. The WWF has always been full of cornucopians more concerned with profits than substance.

If thats WWF as in the World Wildlife Federation I can see that. Ive met some enviro- types that are convinced we will keep on keeping on with our hydrocarbon love affair because thats what we have always been doing without any concern to whether it is physically possible.
