What are your "frivolous" hobbies?

Unread postby Narz » Thu 07 Jun 2007, 19:06:32

I like board games, chess seriously, other ones just as a fun pasttime.

I used to be fairly into computer games (Civilization I & II specifically) but I these days I prefer the simplicity and low-techness of board games. I'd like to come up with my own at some point.

How about you?

I'm an incorrigible, unrepentant rockhound who will go to the ends of the frickin' Earth to blast, dig and pry out a few measly gems, crystals, mineral specimens or fossils. If there are really high mountain peaks to climb nearby I'll do that too.

Scuba diving and U/W photography are also high on the list but since I fried my lungs with some fumes from flux-core wire while MIG welding, that's been less of an issue. My sinuses are getting better and better however so it's just a matter of time before I get the tanks hydro'd and the regs serviced.

Every other hobby curiously enough, has some practical relevance to PO/CC/doompocalyptic horror etc. Go figure....

I draw plans/maps of fake cities/towns/regions and the highway signs that would be seen in them. Incessantly.

I don't know why.

Because of binge drinking your creativity away (like sheeple do), you chose a more productive outlet.

I am actually starting to write a little fantasy novel. I just love the concept of immortal Elves, valour and all that. I am trying to incorporate a grandson who virtually worships his grandfather (who is in fact a god in the world).

I do like to play computer games, like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. However, after I discovered Peak Oil, I haven't bought a new computer game. Peak Oil made me examine and rediscover what I liked in games I already had, so I just play what I already have (with a new twist).

I like coming up with mathematical formulas related to sequences.

It's relaxing and fun to me.

I know it sounds wierd, and it is, but hey, it's my frivolous pursuit.

Also I like going to open discussion forum on Peak Oil, but that also counts as my social interaction for the most part.

I also like coming up with ideas for things and fantasizing about various scenarios, how people would react, how things would react, ect...

Amateur Atv racing. It costs me less than a lot of hobbies and I know it won't be around/affordable much longer, so I enjoy it while I can. Also my quad (250cc 4 stroke, 5 speed) only burns about a gallon during a 2 hour race.

I know it sounds like play, but you wouldn't believe how much of a workout it is to run rough terrain at the hardest pace possible for 1-1/2 to 2 hours. I'm usually sore for days.

Currently, mine is farming and running a seasonal roadside market. My wife supports my habit.

Hopefully, in the future it will not be so frivolous.

Other than that, I am addicted to auctions!

I really enjoy subverting the dominant paradigm. Like learning about money, thinking up ideas for political cartoons, oh...and bad puns. I like to torture the language and my friends at the same time.

I like sailing and I absolutely eat, breath, sleep and s.it rugby. Next to do is a coaching course so I can train my 2 boys.

Of course rugby or any team sport is great for young kids. Builds teamwork, focused aggression, fitness, strength and dexterity.

I used to like flying until I found out about PO. Liked parachuting as well.

Photomicrography. I love old manual microscopes, and have a beautiful, large vintage Jena with a trinocular head. Here are a couple of my shots:

Looking at water from the lake is my favourite. Hours of fascinating enjoyment.

Horse-riding, reading, pc games, interweb surfing and my newest hobby - archery.

Taking up shooting and gardening soon - can't wait!

Ok, so not all are frivolous... just the computer related stuff really.

Despair not my earthbound friend! If you like flying and parachuting I would recommend looking into Paragliding! The only power required is your legs to hike up the hill. And with the right wind and or thermals you can soar for hours!

(well ok I'm sure some AROC type will point out that _making_ said glider requires fossil fuels..)

Posting at peak oil sites on the internetss.

Other "hobbies" are far too important to be called hobbies: farming, beekeeping, canning and preserving, fiddling.

Hmm, frivolous for me would be composing music, playing guitar, surfing the net, collecting switchblades and traveling to exotic places. :)

autocross, rallycross, hillclimbs, and road racing. I guess it's time to get into bicycle racing.
