Alternative Housing

Saw my first Yurt (in the US anyway) today. Was pretty impressive (for just a 12K investment).

Anyone else live in (or are building) an alternative type home?

Where did you see it? Did you get a tour? I have read about them for years but can't picture them being more energy efficient than a well build modest house with good insulation.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

A lady I work with owns one.

Now they are banned by the building code here but not when she built it.

I imagine they can be made pretty energy efficient (the Mongols are into them and it ain't exactly a tropical paradise up there) if done right. They're not really meant to "stand for the ages" but because of their round shape they can withstand over 100MPH winds supposedly. The cost, vertical space, ease of construction and customizablity were what impressed me.
