MythBusters tested this too, and found that the myth was busted. They used a dynamometer and used both carburetored and fuel-injected cars, and they actually got a little worse mileage with the acetone.

I never bothered with Acetone, but what I did do was buy a bottle of injector cleaner from the dollar store. This bumped my MPG from 27.2 to 30.4 -- a net savings of about $3.50 for a tank of gas. I think the real moral of the story is to make sure your car is in perfect working order.

That is a great thread. Thanks for digging it up.

I've got a gas saving idea. Magic Gas Rocks™. Simply drop a Magic Gas Rock™ (MGR™) into you gas tank after filling up. The MGR™ will improve your millage up to 2% for that tank of gas. The secret is in the hydration of lime exchanging impurities from the gasoline for extra combustible chemicals.

btw, that injector cleaner is just alcohol. Filling up with ethanol will do the same thing (and probably a bit better quality than a dollar store product)
